Hi bud, id defo look at the K&N website or similar and purchase a dynojet kit, glowing cylinders are a defo NO NO, ive got a tuned xj650 engine in a trike and its got open pipes and K&N`s but ive only gone up a touch on the mains and it runs fine, starts on the button and idles like a dream. :)

What color are the plugs? If they're white, the engine's running way too lean. I've got a K&N air filter, and a 4-into-1 exhaust on my 81 XJ650 and I went up to 120 main jets and 42 pilots.
Remember, it's not just the mains you have to change but the pilots as well. And raising the needle may help as well. But since the 650 needles don't have grooves you'll have to use brass washers and experiment with how much the needles need to raised. At least this can be done without removing the carbs from the bikes each time. Just take the top off each carb, pull out the diaphram and you can reach the needle and make your brass washer adjustments. But make sure the washers are brass. The gas will each right through anything plastic.

I just went though this on my bike. The last owner changed the exhaust, but didn’t do anything else. When I got her she was lean on the high end. Dynojet makes a kit that comes with almost everything. I just put one in mine. 4 sets of main jets and adjustable needles. Cost varies with the bike but they are mostly around a buck and a quarter.
