Should there be a reflector in the possition indicated by the arrow?

Actually, I believe there should be a HORN in that position, at least there was on the US market bikes. A quick check of the fiche agrees with this photo (from Google not my bikes although I wish they were.)

It doesn't matter. Your bike looks so good that everyone will see you.
My XJ and XS1100 have reflectors there, but my 79XS1100 does not.

the reflectors are are on the area just above where the upper and lower forks meet, they are held on by a springy wire clip - in the area where your arrow is, the horn sits

look at my 750 photo, these things might be visible there in it...

Fitz, this model has only one horn, but the bracket is a double, just a cost cutting exercise for this part of the world. I have been plagued with this all my life, ( quote- oh that's the luxury / special model, made for the U.S.A. market )
The area I speak of is the flat plate / webb on the frame, mine has 2 small holes & it looks like it could use something there, I have seen a reflector in that spot on some models.

Hmmm. In the pic I posted, those US bikes have reflectors on the sides of the headlights. There are some of the Maxims (I believe) that have a vertically oriented "rounded rectangular" reflector in that area. Maybe you could do some "parts room engineering" of your own and add them. Might even still be available from Mama Yama, I got the round reflectors for my 550's front forks right from Yamaha, $8 apiece.

I have those same holes you speak of on my frame too.
As far as I know there where never reflectors there.
Mine looks just like the pic Fitz posted.

Hey Wiz; Take a look at this, are these (items #23-28) what you're talking about? The reflectors themselves are still available from Yamaha. If not avail "down under" I can pick up a set and shoot them off to you. Ya on ya own for item 24 though, those are discontinued. I do see them on eBay on occasion though.

Thanks for the kind offer, Fitz, but I don't think this model was ever intended to be adorned with those particular excrescencies.
Strange, that back plate assembly (24), it's almost as if it could take a bulb in there.

I agree. I think #24 is a big solid chunk of rubber with a recess for the reflector, I don't THINK it's hollow.
