I have been trying to figure out a problem with my 81 maxim. I don't seem to have the power that I should have. I noticed that the pipes on 2 and 3 are much cooler than 1 ad 4. I have cleaned the carbs again and set the pilot screws at 2 an 1/2 to start with and now it seems that the pipes are getting closer to the same. I thought that I just had a weak spark I chaged coils and the same thing. I was wondering what to try next, the pickup coils or tci box?

    Here's a pretty simple test.

Hook-up a piece of hose to the Vacuum Port on the Number-2 Manifold.
Block off the end with a Golf-Tee.

    Run the Bike.
Once you get it going ... Pull-out the Golf-Tee and shoot-in some Carb Cleaner.

If the RPM's rise ... its NOT Ignition related. It's Fuel Supply related.

    Very simple.
    Tell us what happens.

I would be willing to bet that your pilot jets on 2and 3 are dirty I finally had to change the carb on my #1 to get it to run never could get the pilot circuit clean enough to run right

Eliminate the possibility of it being the Coil if you have not do so already.

Find the two Plug-in's from the Coils to the Wiring Harness and swap them around.
    If the Problem switches from 2 & 3 -to- 1 & 4 ... its Ignition related.

the problem switched to 1 and 4 now they are cool. I tryed the golf tee and shot choke cleaner in it and it did not increase the rpm. I believe that I read resistence on the other side of the coil plug and they are both the same. That should go to the pickup coil right?

I read the pickup coils and they both read the same. I was wondering if I could switch the orange and gray lead at the tci to see if the trouble follows. I also looked at the tci box and there are no connections that I can see that are bad. I am going to take a better look at the pickup coils. I am thinking I have a resistentence ground on the black wire. I noticed when i use the spark plug tester on the plug if you turn the ignition switch off and on you get a pulse, but 1 and 4 is bright 2 and 3 is dim. if this is a lost spark ignition,i am thinking if i can switch the pickup wires i should be able to tell if it is the tci or pickup coils.

Thank you all for the ideas, I just need a little reinforcement once in awhile. I think that I have it down to the pickup coil. I appreciate all the help.

    No.
Don't reverse the wiring feeding the TCI.
    That's not a good choice.

If you think the TCI is at Fault ... test the Bike by running it on a TCI known to be Good.

my problem on cylinders 2 and 3 turned out to be a bad tci igniter box. I got another one of off ebay and put it in and now the bike is running great thanks for all your help. I still haven't gotten my pickup coils yet,but I will at least have spares.
