3-gallon fillups are annoying me. does anybody know of a larger gas tank that will fit a stock 85 xj700 maxim? willing to do minor mods to make it fit, nothing radical though please. I'm in SF Bay CA if that helps.

I hear ya. I have had my 85 XJ700 for 8 days now and am wondering the same thing. Twice I got the red gas light while cruising so I filled up about 2 gallons but yesterday at 64 miles into a tank the bike died on me while on the highway - no red light this time so I thought surely it wasn't a gas issue.

Switched to reserve and I was on my way albeit thinking about how I could cruise for more than an hour without gassing up! So you are filling up three gallons?

I'm sure you can find something from here that you'll like.

The optional nylon cover makes it look like you're hauling a duffel bag.

Tanks for the tourtank.com suggestion, but I'm already pretty good at carrying a can when crossing deserts;-)

I'm looking for a larger probably-Yamaha tank that will replace my dinky 3-gallon (useable) job.

    4.5 Gal to be exact.

One thing I did for my 650 was add the 750's tank. However, I didn't use the 750's fuel valve standpipe. I kept the 650's standpipe. It's just a bit shorter than the 750's. Typically, the 750 has 4.5 gallon capacity, which includes a 1.1 gallon reserve. Using the 650's standpipe, I've found that I only get 0.7 gallon reserve.

I'm typically never too far from a gas station.

It'd be nice to drop a 750 tank onto the 700 models -- I have one of each, so I can also attest to the lack of range -- but I do believe the two are completely different animals.

I'm wondering if it would be possible to fab a larger tank in order to get the mounting points correct...

You're the man on this one, thanks for chiming in.

people are saying they can put a XJ750Maxim tank on a XH650Maxim,
but you (and others) are saying the XJ750 won't work on XJ700.

I was hoping maybe the distinction was Maxim vs Seca, but I guess not.

how does this modelName correlation work? feel free to tell me to rtfm on this, but which fm?-)

Thr problem with the 700 tanks is that they sit much LOWER onto the frame than all the other models, and they are shorter lengthwise. Other XJ-series tank will NOT fit unless you do EXTENSIVE mods, in which case you're probably better off just getting someone to custom-fab a tank for you................

I don't know about being "the man"... I don't consider myself overly knowledgeable.

Bear in mind that there are a couple of years separating the two; I could very well be wrong, but I think the reason the 750 tank works on the 650 is that the frame is the same, if not close. For the '85 and '86 models, that changed. Ergo, the earlier tank doesn't fit on the later models. Again, just a guess on my part.

It'd probably take a bit of head-scratching to come up with one that doesn't look clunky and nightmarish.

I'm also reminded that there's an article on the XJCD where one enterprising owner used a 650 tank as a base and built an extension onto the top of it -- the end result was referred to as a FrankenTank.
