Just picked up my first Yamaha, a 86 maxim x 750. Got it from a co-worker that thought he would like riding and found out the Houston traffic scared the hell out of him. $600 bucks for a running, tagged and inspected bike with a clear title and 7,000 original miles= I couldn't pass it up. Brought it home cleaned out the carbs and put some freash fuel in and off I went. Best $600 I've spent all year.

I'm going to set it up in a couple weeks and make a bobber out of it. So one question I have about it is has anyone looked at changing one over to chain drive to fit a wider tire in the back?

Here's a pic of the bike as it sits currently.

Sounds like a great deal. Chain conversion has been discussed - try the search you will find lots of opinions. Not sure how easy that would be given the way the middle gear drives the shaft.

My question would be why? IMHO shaft is less maintenance.

Because I can't find any other way to make it wide enough to fit a 190 or larger tire in the back. I also havn't found any rims that I like that will mount up to the drive setup it has currently. But I am still looking and haven't even had this bike a week yet. Just thought I would bring it up. I had a four wheeler that was shaft dive that the rearend housing had broke on and it was fairly easy to change over to chain drive with the addition of a swingarm and axle from another one.

Sorry if this has been discussed before as I am a new member of the forum.

Don't worry lots of stuff gets rehashed. I was just pointing out there is a lot of discussion you may want to read.

I really like shafts and the overall look of the bikes as they were made, so I was curious why you wanted to mod it. We have a lot of members that have heavily modified their bikes

Thats what I thought when I came to Houston in 1980. I had an XS650 then. I couldn't imagine taking the freeway's main lanes now.
Where you located now asphaltgecko ?

    Are you sure this is a Maxim-X? I have an 86 Maxim-X XJ700XS. There is a 86 Maxim-X XJ750XS but it wasn't sold in the U.S. Otherwise the Maxim-X 700/750's looked practically identical.

Regardless your bike doesn't look anything like mine. Was there a different variation on Maxim-X's I'm unaware of?

I'm pretty sure it is a maxim X as the aluminum bar on the sides of the back fender State Maxim X. I uploaded a better picture.

Also the title does state it to be an 86'. Just double checked to make sure.

Got it!! For some reason the first link you gave went directly to a yellow bike. Maybe I didn't look around hard enough. Be sure to check out www.maxim-x.com. Lots of information specifically about this model motorcycle.

Also, invest $10.00 and get the XJ CD set that includes scanned service manuals, parts diagrams, a cross reference database of parts that are interchangeable with other XJ bikes, etc. There's a sticky thread under the XJ Chat Forum that tells you how. They are worth their weight in gold.
