Well, i finally got around to it, installing my Sportster mufflers. I was going to do a how-to, but i just went on a roll and forgot about it.
If you like what you see just pm me or post here, i gues i'd prefer if you post here, any questions, up close pictures, or if you want a how-to i will do it, because i messed up on one side, used too big of an adapter, and i will re-do it. Note: if you can find a 1 1/2" ID- 1 134 ID adapter snag it, i couldnt find one anywhere, it wouldbe really nice. so if really ANYONE is interested on a how to ill do it,

This first picture is my before pic with the honda pipes, they look nice, but they're really rusty on the bottom.

Now, those muffler clamps look like hell, i dont mind. some people cut the pips coming out fo the collector at the angle, so the pipes are straight... i didnt want to because i want this stock. As far as noise, it isnt louder by much, but its deeper. I like the sound alot more, its raspier, throatier, deeper, and just a bit louder.
I would like some suggestions from those who have sportsters on, if i did anythign wrong
I didnt re-jet, and when i took it out on the road it sounded fine.
Sorry about my bike being dirty, the pipes need to be polished again, and it rained recently and i really wanted to take my bike down the road, so it got muddy

Spin the clamps around and hide the bolts. The order up some generic motorcycle clamps from http://www.jpcycles.com/groups.aspx?LID ... 02bb1fa2d0 or the like. Take a good long (12-20 mile) ride. Go home and pull your plugs and see what they look like, then you'll have something to make a "rejetting" decision with. Don't want to guess especially if it's running lean.

Did you have to reduce or enlarge from your pipes to the mufflers?

enlarge... and i cant spin the one clamp, because there are slits cut into the sportster mufflers, and if i turned the the other way, well it wouldnt bend rite... what am i looking for on the plugs? if its rich it looks like,.... if its lean it looks like...

i finally got around to throwing some sporties on my 650, i cut the headers off with an angle grinder where the outside diameter was the same as the sporties, and just mig welded them together. came out clean, with a bit of an up angle still, though not so much as to keep the exhaust from the saddlebags.

don't have to worry about exhaust leaks with the welding, whereas you might with the clamps.

rejetting is another thing, though. i seem to be running a bit lean.

This whole thing with putting on Sportster mufflers reminds me of what people say "YAMAHA" stands for...

    Your
    Aunt's
    Motor
    And
    Harley
    Accessories

(Then again, if I did have an aunt that designed motorcycle engines for a living... that would be SO cool.)

Of course it would look better with smaller chrome clamps, but I do like the fact that you have not had to do a lot of surgery on it, or get out the JB Weld/muffler patch cement. I bought some in May, but have not worked on it since I have been 6 days a week at work and 7 days a week doing renovations in the house this summer.

I still have my GSXR can on one side and it is starting to annoy me.

I was going to shoot pics of a local XJ'er who did the mod but did not have a camera, so I will have to dig up his info.

Those are the same mufflers I have on mine. I used the stock clamps however and they bolted up perfect. If I were to use automotive type clamps as you did, I'd get'm chromed ro try to cover them with some type of chrome guard to hide them.
They do sound alot better than the stock ones did, I agree. I tried a pair of HarleyScreamin' Eagle mufflers also, but they were way louder.

Take it to a muffler shop and find a guy who really knows how to gas weld.
Then paint the weld black. Should cost $20.
What's with all that lettering on the left pipe? If that is stamped, it's a source of future rust (IMHO).

You could easily make them quieter. Before welding them on, make a reducer inside the front of the muffler. My old Kerker muffler on my first 900 breathed thru a single reducer about the diameter of my thumb!
