Running out of gas early? Tank problem?

    Hi All,

Time to pick some brains again. I had a problem on the weekend with my fuel running out on my 85 Maxim-X 750.

Specifically, I was running out of power and eventually the bike stalled. With only ~100km on the trip meter from a full tank I wasn't even thinking about gas. On a whim, I flipped to reserve, and the bike roared to life. I went straight to the gas station but was only able to fit 8 liters in the tank. I think the tank should hold 14 liters.

Is the pet-cock causing problems, or is it something inside the tank? Maybe the intake inside the tank is sitting too high?

    Thanks,

    Corey

Maybe you are under filling it - or perhaps there is a pop bottle in the gas tank ;)

Fill it right to the bottom of the filler neck... just go slow on the last part.

Do you have the bike on the side stand when you fill it? You can squeeze a few more drops in by having the bike upright in the ride position. Center stand would work as well.

Obviously, as woot said, go slow on that last part.

Could be six litres of dent filler in the tank ;)

The litres put in would be about right. From memory, my 550 has about five litres remaining when put on reserve. Mileage seems a bit low but that depends on riding style.

    Gremlins...definately gremlins.

They hit me late Sunday night and now they've come for you.

I wish I had some serious input, the only things I could think of have been covered already.

if you have a vacuum fuel tap , either no vacuum or its leaking , as it needs that to open the tap.....

Thanks for the tips guys. I did another 100km and fill, and fit about 5.5 liters in. That would seem about right - no windshield, no fairing, lots of 5-6K RPM. I didn't use the center stand for filling yet, next time...

I don't see any dents in the tank, so I'm thinking either partial fill, or the intake is borked. I think I'll yank it out next time I'm empty, but I'm feeling lazy right now. It's so beautiful in Vancouver lately and I just want to ride!
