i want to get rid of all the wires and ugly speedo and tach, can you simply start the bike and unplug connectons to find out witch ones are actually needed for the bike to run or is there some regulator or something that the bike will run without but not for long?

I did that on my 83 Maxim 650 and it runs great. I am not an expert but I did get the results I expected with the wiring. I also removed the signal lights and clutch lever switch.

No. I bundled them up and wrapped them with electrical just incase they will be used in the future. Stashed them all under the tank, seat and covers. I see no problem with cutting them providing you insulate the ends. First make sure the bike runs incase you have to backtrack your work.

What XJ do you have? Maxim, SECA, ????

For the SECAs, a lot of the electrical system runs THROUGH the computer, so you'll need to jumper those contacts if you want to remove the intrument cluster.

A MAXIM 650 and I also pulled the plug on the neutral, hi-beam, oil, signal and whatever lights were included with the cluster between the speedo and tach. How are you making out?

I made the housing and brackets out of stainless steel pipe, a plexiglass face with an amuninum bottom. The guts were from an old Honda speedo.

I've done the same to mine. I just kept the wires I needed and hid the others after I labeled them (incase I decide to add something later)
I found it easier to move the wires where I needed them by cutting out all the plastic connectors and soldering them together, then sealing the connections with heat shrink tubing. Those plastic connectors are just in the way and are the cause of poor connections due to moisture. It made the "birds nest" alot smaller and easier for me to hide behind the headlight housing.
I kept the high/low beam headlight wires (2) the turn signal wires (3) and the nuetral indicator wires (2) and used LED lights for the instrument indicators. I also used the old instrument light wires to light up my new speedometer.
By re-doing the wiring, it simplified things alot and made it much easier to trouble shoot any problems I may have in the future (which I don't seem to have anymore now that I got rid of the mess of plastic connectors)
