I've got an '82 xj750 (touring style with the factory fairing) with 30k miles on it. The last month or so, I've had a noise like a metalic hum, almost like a ringing or horn sound right when it turns over after sitting at least a few hours. It lasts maybe 2 seconds and is gone. The bike does start, but I'm worried something might be rubbing that shouldn't.
I've got to tear down the carbs this winter, so I'm wondering if there is something else lurking inside that needs attention.
    Any ideas?

The sound you hear is the engine pushing the starter.

When the oil is cold (thick) the starter clutch is slow to disengage. You might want to go to a 10w30 for winter if you have something heavier in there.

My 650 did the same thing.

I had that exact same bizaare noise !!! trust me , as youve seen its VERY hard to describe ! LOL

it has almost completly gone away with 3 things i did,

    1. added weather stripping between radiator and radiator cover sides.
    2. did complete crancase cleanout ( filled with disel fuel and let sit over night then drained it all out and did it agian over night, drained it and then
replaced it with new oil, ran engine for about 3 mins, drained oil agian
    and replaced with new...
man what a difference ... that engine is smooth as a sewing machine now..

    3. had carb boots all replaced, several were cracked and whistling...

now that weird metal hum noise is almost completly gone at cold start and is all gone at warmed up...

i think the other guy was right it has something to do with clutch mechanisim but not sure what part...

FILLED up with fuel, or used the same volume as an oil change?

Ah, good idea, I've been running straight 30weight.

How long did you run the bike with the diesel in it?

Thanks everyone, sorry it took me a while to get back in here.

I don't think he would run the bike with diesel in it, instead of oil. Running straight 30 weight is too heavy in the winter time.
