    G'day from australia,
only just got told about this site, from another.
    I have found a 1986 XJ900 N in good condtion for sale !
iam currently riding a 1992 el 250 as a daily commute to work& back,
I have a buyer for my bike (and waiting for the buyer to get a answer from the bank so i can purchase the xj 900)
the bike i have found has n rego on it (blue slip needed). Being still very green to the motorcycle scene i only have full licence for three months.
the research that i have done the xj 900 would suit me & my budget very well, now the bike i think is in showroom condition.
    trough my eyes i see,
4 into 1 exhaust,2 brand new metzler tyres, disc rotors are good, fork seals are good,it has no pitting in the aluminium, still has milling marks on the wheels, they are the good things, now on the negative side, seat needs recovering, instument cluster a bit dodegy, bearings? oil in shaft drive ,rust in petrol tank?
Here is the question,is there anything that i should be on the lookout for ???
i do have a picture but iam not sure how to do upload it:oops:
    thank you in advance for input/advice, 8) 8) 8) 8)

    Cheers Albear

    Albear,

Glad you may your way to this site. Rather than repeat what I wrote on the other forums I will simply welcome you and leave it to the experts to provide some recommendations.

NOTE: Don't forget to do a thorough search of the forums, as there is a lot of existing info on checking XJ's at purchase.

    Cheers,
    oby

Welcome albear,if you like the look of it, check the compression & make sure it's not dripping oil, if ok, go for it. Wiz

    Greetings from beautiful downtown Melbourne.

I have an '85 XJ900 so might be able to assist in some areas if needed.

Mine was complete but a bit of a basket case when I got it and, one winter/spring period later, it was roadworthy and running.

Petrol tank...mine sprung a pinhole leak near the pointy end at the back on one side - so far have filled it with a compund that sets hard when dry - sort of like a radiator sealant that resists petrol etc. A good temporary fix but needs something more permanent.

Steering head beraings, wheel bearings should be OK so long as it hasn't had a misused life.

The only thing to watch out for are the carbies - need to be clean with the correct idle mixture settings, and whether the ooriginal piston rings are still OK or is it drinking oil. I replaced the rings on mine and it made it run like new.

Electrics can be a bit tricky but let's cross one bridge at a time.

    Cheers,

    Karl

Been using my 900 for everyday transport for the last 45,000 kilometres. (Five years). Now has 128,000 on the clock and I still haven't done anything expensive to it-battery, tyres, recovered seat, fiddled with the electrickery a bit, very small repair to the fairing, changed the oil a lot, and that's about it. Couldn't ask for better.
Oh yes, I've enjoyed every one of those kilometres!
