Hey folks - hoping someone can chime in here.

    81 Maxim 650 for reference.
Anyone else had their gauges apart?
For the speedometer/odometer/tripmeter side, the connector coming out has 3 wires -- one's common ground (black), one's for the guage bulb (blue), and the other (white/grn stripe) goes to --- something. It's that "something" I'm curious about, 'cuz I've blown it.

It's a black rectangle connector about 2cm long x 8mm high - connects at the back of the housing below the bulb hole, right on top of the cable gear mechanism. Appears to have a hard-wired 'something' on the inside -- almost like a bulb, but looks more like a fuseable link -- covered in a tube of light blue glass. That's what's blown.

For those that care, I was testing circuits and accidentally got the wrong 2 wires apparently - don't know how... strange.....

    So anyone know:
    1 - what is it?
    2 - what's it do?
    3 - can I get another one?

    Thanks any and all

Hi Altus, I would say you have the speedometer sensor ( reed switch ) that's part of the self cancelling flasher circuit.

The white/green wire goes back to the cancelling unit. This reed switch just sends on/off pulses to the cancelling unit, after 150 meters the system turns off the flashers.

Are you sure it's blown? To test the manual says to connect an ohm meter to the white/green and the black wires located at the 6 pin connector. This would be at the self cancelling unit, under the seat next to the air intake. Set the ohm meter to Rx100 scale. Remove the speedometer cable at the front wheel and turn the inner cable end to turn the speedometer. If all is well the ohm meter will alternate between zero and infinite resistance
    ( reed switch is turning on/off ).

    Hope this helps!
