politely ask what it is and what his plans are for it
i think if you talk about restoring it you'll have a better chance of getting it, putting it back to it's old self, some people don't like the idea of seeing their old bike getting chopped up
    if its a BMW beg

wait for him to go running and steal it.

    just kidding....

ask what his plans are for it, and be prepared to work around his house for payment.

nothing ventured nothing gained. polock is right about restoring it i would never sell my xj to someone i thought wouldn't take care of it, if it didn't have soom meaning to him he wouldn't still have it, some people would rather let it rot than then watch someone do something to it that they don't like or approve of. you need him to belive that it will be in good hands with you.

Like many have said costs nothing to ask.
My brother drove past a ski boat sitting in the front yard of a house just round the corner from his place for about 18 months noticed it never moved so on the way home one day he stopped and asked if the owner wanted to sell it.
The guy told him he could have it!
Rebuilt 302 and trailer, glass boat in good nick, nice trim and it hammers. Free.
    Nothing to lose.
Ask your Dad,if he knows the guy he might be able to help.
