I think any system with Dot 3 you can use Dot 4 as long as you flush the system out.
Back me up on this guys!!

DOT 3/4 are very close and I belive are ok if you have a tiny bit in the sys. DOT 5 you do not want to mix with the others...

My bike says DOT 4 as well so thats what I intend to put back when I do my maintenance.

I don't believe you even need to flush. Dot 4 and Dot 3 are compatible with each other. Seals will be fine with either.

Dot 4 has a moderately higher boiling point.

Do not mix DOT 5, it causes bad things to happen.

Now that you have the Brake Fluid situation under control.
The Motor Oil problem solved ...

Here's the scoop on the Alternator.

Don't add any load to the Alternator. The Alternator is just-about topped-out keeping the Bike running -- Stock.
If you add lighting ... make them LED's.

The Alternator Brushes are capable of just so much.
Too much of a load will place the Alternator Rotor at risk.

From what I understand all the XJ's suffer from low current.

    I've read it's 19.5 amps, 250 watts measured at 5,000 RPM.
That's for a new bike. Take the cover off the left side and measure your brushes, or look for the factory dimple - wear indicator. The surface that the brushes rub against should be clean. In fact, every electrical contact and connector or junction on the bike should be clean.

do you guys know if they sell aftermarket alternators?

i am not trying to power my house, i just want to add lighting (non led lighting) and i don't want to overtax it or drain my battery while i am sitting

i plane on converting everything i can over to led (except the headlight(s))
