Can anyone who has dragbars tell me if they limit the range of motion of the front tire (i.e. they hit the gas tank). If so, are you still able to ride as long as you are careful. Any input would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

I have drag bars on mine and just barely clear, but they make it...not a stock tank though but believe mine is slightly bigger or damn close to the same size width as an xj tank. You could always just put risers on the bars to get you clear.

I have "european" bend low bars on my Seca 550s and they leave me about 3/8" clearance between the controls and the tank, lock-to-lock. A straight bar will almost certainly require risers of some sort or you will hit at even partial "lock."

They limit the motion when you maneuver the bike around tight parking spaces. But when riding you never come close to the turn limits.
Cut out some pads to protect the tank and stick 'em on.

I thought about that protomillenium. Wasn't sure what to use as pads though. If I extend the bars 1 1/2" on either end (pipes and jb weld ) and push the controls further out they will just barely clear. I guess that is an option if I can't find the appropriate risers.

Don't get me wrong, JBWeld is good stuff, but I don't think I'd trust my life to it.

I don't have a photo so it is hard to explain but I still have about 1/2 of the "handlegrip area" on the bars themselves. I would only be extending the bars a little bit by sleeving pipe into the bars and then over that pipe to match the 7/8" diameter. There really wouldn't be any tensile pressure on the jb weld. I could also drill through the pipes and screw them on.

I'm still exploring other options but the price of risers really floored me.

Here are the risers (7/8) I just bought for 35$ on ebay. Think they'll fit?

    Sold as "Handlebar Risers DRZ400 DR650 XR650 CRF450 KTM250"

Take the palm of your hand and smack in the sides of your tank. Reduces your capacity but it'll let you turn. Or you could tack-weld thin round-stock patterns on the side, hammer inside of it, finish it off and paint. Tiny penut tank...
Or you could just get risers.

I had "broomstick" style dragbars on my bike and they never hit the tank. They were 32" long. From what I see, the dragbars that contain a slight angle in the grip will hit on most XJ's. But they look so damn cool, a little sacrifice for the effect is well worth it. Good luck.
