Does anyone know if a 81 550 maxim fuel petcock will fit a 81 550 seca fuel tank. Found one cheap and want to see if it would fit before i buy it thanks. Jesse

The XJCD shows two different part numbers so it won't be a direct fit. Still may work so wait for someone to post who has tried one to see.

Yamaha shows different part numbers too with some odd interchangeability:

4K0-24500-01-00 the 550 Maxim petcock was used on all 3 years 550 Max and the '82 650 Seca.

4H7-24500-01-00 for the 550 Seca was used on all 3 years 550 Seca plus on the '82 and '83 650 Maxim.
This IS still available from Yamaha although it is "modernized" and shares nothing (including general appearance) with the original and costs way too much. I know because I bought one (before I found XJBikes and chacal) that I haven't installed yet.

I've got $5 that says it has to do with the angle of the fuel outlet. You might be able to go with that petcock and then just replace the outlet bit.

    Take a look in chacal's catalog http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewforum/f=23.html
I'm sure he has the answer.

Well yes, in fact, I do!

The original-original petcock for the 550 Max and the 550 Seca's were identical, except for the height of the "tower" fuel filter that was included with the petcock unit. The 550 Max used a "shorter" filter than the 550 Seca and 650 Maxim models.....and the current replacement filter that is available is the "taller" of the two styles (but it works just fine in all of these tanks, although, over time the suppliers mold has deteriorated and the oval base of the filter----where it snaps into the petcock cavity----has become slightly "swollen" dimensionally, and it requires a bit of slight manicuring to get it to fit into the petcock body).

The current 34mm replacement petcocks come in two flavors: both are different in appearance from the originals, and do not share any interchangable parts with the originals. They still look like "petcocks", but it's a "same-but-different" type of appearance (for the purists).

The only difference between the two styles is that the HCP625 petcock has the fuel outlet nipple pointed straight back AND tilted OUTWARDS (away from the centerline of the bike) at about a 30-45-degree angle.

The HCP626 petcock has the fuel outlet nipple pointed STRAIGHT BACK, parallel to the centerline of the bike, and is a more useful orientation.

Otherwise, both are direct bolt-on replacements for all the different styles of original petcocks on all XJ550, all XJ650 models (except Turbo), and all XJ750 models.

The replacement 650 Turbo petcocks are identical to the originals.

The replacement 700/900 style petcocks are identical to the originals, and feature a slightly improved design that allows the mounting screws to be fully removed from the petcock body, rather than have one of them "trapped" by the fuel outlet nipple (as it was on the original design). XJ700 and 900 owners will understand what I'm talking about here......strangest thing I've ever come across. A true marvel of ridiculous engineering.....

I also offer a few different styles of On-Off Fuel Valve Kits (no vacuum-triggered, automatic on-off functionality, as with the original or these replacement petcocks) that also works well as a replacement item.

One other issue on original petcocks: on these XJ-series of bikes, there are actually a couple of different styles of petcocks.........not even counting the "height of the fuel filter" issue.

    * All XJ550 models, and all XJ650 Maxim and XJ650RJ Seca models, used one style petcock body: natural finish, and with a "short" fuel outlet cover plate nipple port.

    * The 650 Midnight Maxim models used this same petcock as above, but the body was black.

    * All XJ750 Seca models used the same natural-finish petcock body, but the fuel outlet cover plate nipple port has a "long" arm cast into it.

    * The XJ750 Maxim models used an entirely different petcock body, and it featured a single drain screw on the lower part of the body.

    * The 750 Midnight Maxim models used the same style petcock body as the 750 Maxim models, but it was painted black.

    * The 650 Turbo petcock was in a world of it's own, and interchanges with no other petcock.

    * The XJ700 and XJ900RK used a much larger petcock body, and the fuel outlet nipple port was in the center of the petcock body, rather than being cast into a separate, removable fuel outlet cover plate. The vacuum diaphram mechanism was also much larger. This petcock body came either with or without a lower drain screw, and we do not know which models or years used which one.

    * The XJ1100 models used two different petcocks, one for the right side and one for the left side (they are mirror opposites of each other), and the vacuum control mechanism was located within a separate "vacuum pod" unit, divorced from the petcock body itself.

    Interchangability:

    * ALL of the XJ550, XJ650 (except Turbo), and XJ750 style petcocks use a "small" petcock body (34mm mounting hole center-to-center spacing) and can be physically interchanged with each other.

    * BOTH styles of the XJ700/900RK petcocks use a "large" petcock body (46mm mounting hole center-to-center spacing) and will not interchange with any of the 34mm style petcocks.

    * The XJ650 Turbo petcocks can only be used on those models.

    * The XJ1100 petcocks, while using the same "small" 34mm hole spacing as the XJ550/650/750 models, lacks the vacuum-actuated on-off features, and has only a On and Reserve function.

    Hope this helps...!
