Well, my first post on the board, and I am glad I found you guys. I have been lurking for couple days while I figure out some things to do with my new ride. Seems I picked up a 1986 XJ700X. It was a trade in at a local Harley Davidson dealer. The starter button decided to stop working on them so they tried to bypass it. I guess in the process they blew the 10amp fuse, (located at Jewel Light case) and they had no idea they did. They bought new coils and TEC ignition, trying to get it to run, and finally gave up. They listed it for $500.00, and I was the first to call!! I gave them my deposit over the phone, made the trip south of the city, picked it up not running, took it home, checked and replaced the blown fuse and WHAMMO!! IGNITION!! I also found the starter solenoid was corroded, so I cleaned the connectors and now the starter button even works. The bike has 33k miles on it and I believe it has a bobber rear fender. It has forward controls, and decent tires. Seems to run good too, a little hesitant on take off, but I will look into that soon.

I did experience the right blinkers not working tonight, and the headlight dimming while it was trying to blink... yet the left one is fine.... I will check the bullet connections tomorrow and grounds to see if there is a bad wire.

I believe the AD I saw was for 500 in Austin CL...... no phone number and little picture... i responded to AD via email and was the second email the sales guy had, and the first to answer when he called back.......

Is it true the Maxim X is kinda a rarity?

 

yes, those darn harley davidson guys couldnt sell their bikes, so they whined to the us government, who, during 85-86 wouldnt allow any imported bikes over 700cc, so yamaha made the 700 for 2 years, best bike, style wise, IMO, i have one, you're lucky your doesnt skip in 2nd gear like mine, and i have 10k less miles. These bikes were made with a spacer i nthe wrong spot which makes them wear fast in second gear, the engine case needs to be split to fix it.. i have the aircooled versian tho

you bike seems to have a harley rear fender, but im not sure, i wouldnt call it a bobber though, as a bobber, i think, is a lack of a rear fender, yours is huge! but its very nice, and i paid 1500 for mine, sigh, say!!! mind selling me a coil cheap? my bike has a tear in the cable so i need to cover it with electrical tape.

Sounds like it didn't need much. It was probably dirven in for a trade on a Harley.
I was waiting for them to call me back as well !

Welcome and nice buy! you would think a mechanic that works on a bike that breaks down as often as a harley would think to check the small things first!

 

I called the salesman back yesterday to "ask" about the title paperwork. They charged me a DOC fee, yet they wanted me to get the title work done. Anyways, I told him that I needed it soon due to the fact I got the bike running with just replacing the fuse.... He did not sound HAPPY about the news, and insisted that his techs were right about their diagnosis..... I guess thats the difference though between an actual TECHNICIAN and a PREMADONNA!! I consider myself a tech, as I can diagnose and attempt to repair anything... they gave up and just started chunking parts at it because they didn't have "The Proper Wiring Diagram"!! LOL!!

As for the spacer in the trans... Is there a link for a fix??

 

The usual problem with 2nd gear in an XJ trans is the hy-vo chain tensioner (on the starter/alternator jackshaft chain) starts crumbling and pieces get into the shift drum.
ANY repair to the tranny on these bikes requires pulling the motor and splitting the cases.
Don't even let this cloud your mind unless you are actually experiencing a problem. (Don't BANG second on your first-second upshifts.)

ya, dont let that second gear thing spook ya, riding this bike will make you forget anything, lots of hair and is extremely smooth, its second nature for me now to skip second gear, if i get my cb running, second gear will be a wonderful luxury

 

The 700X model is somewhat of a rarity. Nice find on yours. I picked mine up at the same price back in August, but it needed new tires, mirrors, and a random bits on the carbs. Once you get this thing tuned in, it's a real pleasure to ride
