I have a few rust holes near the bottom quarter of my tank and was wondering if anyone had a surefire way of patching without blowing myself up. I'm a welder by trade but have no experience with tanks. I plan on getting the tank lined after the holes are patched.

Just wash your tank out real good witha good soap. I like Dawn dish soap for that job. May be have to rinse and wash twice. Once all the gas smell is gone your good to go. Tig weld in your patches and do alittle bondo work. Give it a nice POR15 shot. Good Luck

There's this trick where you blow car exhaust in the tank to displace all the oxygen before cutting and welding a tank.
Then you can braze the pinholes shut after grinding- - sanding.

    Welcome to the site!!

if it has rust in it you will more than likely never get rid of the smell of gas

fill it with an inert gas that displaces oxygen
with out oxygen it can't burn (and it will protect your weld)

JB Weld works great. plug the holes with JB then use one of the two part epoxy tank lining systems and grind off the JB. If you don't plug the holes iwith the jB the liner oozes out the holes and makes a mess.
