My 82 xj650 tach sometimes works right and then some times it just kinda hangs out wherever it takes a notion to. Nothing consistant. Any advice other than putting a 5" AutoMeter monster tach with a shift light sorta like whats in our race car?

I don't know about your bike honestly. I know my speedo was geeking out on my seca 750 for a day or so, lube solved it. Come to think of it, I can't remember if _my_ tach is cable driven now. :-/

Have a look at the back of the tach... If there's a cable that screws on to the back then it's cable driven... Otherwise it electronic

Your ORIGINAL tach was cable-driven. (If it wasn't replaced by someone along the way, then it is.) You can lube the cable as the first step. The tach itself may require internal cleaning and lubrication which CAN be done but I am not going to tell you is easy. If it's not the cable I would eBay another one. (And then tear the first one apart, but that's just me...)

Side note: The original tach on my '83 started making this incredibly LOUD HOWLING noise one day (that's what test rides are for) and wouldn't go above about 4K and was bouncing all over. I have since fixed it (I think, it was swapped not tested since fixt) but the funny part was on the ride it was howling so loud onlookers could hear it over my engine and THEIR lawnmowers. All the way home people out mowing their lawn would stop and look to see what the heck the howling was as I rode past.

    82 XJ650 has electronic tach.

    Look for nests inside it.

Get to the back of the Tach.
Put some WD-40 in a Bottle Cap.
Take a Toothpick and get a drop of the WD-40.

Hit this spot with two or three drops.

Work the Needle over to the right and release it.
    That should do the trick.

use something like tri-flow rather than WD40. wd will gum up over time and turn into wax. it was not designed as a lubricant, just a water displacer.

Woo Hoo! My tach is working again. After some research on this great site I have repaired or atleast got an idea about some of the gremlins on this thing. Tach quit, then it was having starting issues. So I checked the fuse box and bingo!! Tach works now, and starts a helluva lot better just by cleaning some connections. New fuse block is now on the parts list.
