So i celebrated my first 49th today and I get a card in the mail from my father-in-law, who is giving up riding and what do i get for my birthday? His 1990 goldwing. I can't believe it! 8O

Its got training wheels on it... It is an inexpensive trike conversion. basically outriggers mounted to the frame with heavy rubbe bands.. The bike still has its drive wheel on it. so it really is like huge training wheels. It is mounted with rubber bushings so it gives a bit. A very strange riding feel. I got to ride it once last thanksgiving 2007 and it is completely opposite the usual riding techinique. You have to streer the front end and it leans out rather than in. May take them off eventually, but I figure i will keep them on for awhile at least until I get used to controls of the bike,

    Anyone have any goldwing experience?

    Congratulations on your 49th Birthday.
    What a magnificent Birthday Present!
    Holy Smokes!!!

If you thought there was a lot of maintenance keeping a XJ-Bike going. You'll be spending as much time as you pulled doing maintenance on your XJ ... just keeping that Rig cleaned and shined!

Oh yes. I have a little GWing time under my belt. If you enjoy a smooth, quiet, powerful ride then you are going to be a happy dude. I have a Silverwing, it's under powered little brother and I think I have the comparsion between the Wings and the XJ's figured out. The Wings are a bit stodgey, easily accessorized and are very comfortable to ride. The XJ's by comparison are quick, nimble, and a blast to ride but not as well endowed in the creature comforts as the Wings. The XJ's are specially fun on local rides or on rides where you are flying (sorry) on the twistys instead of burning up the interstate.

The Wings are Cadillacs and the XJ'S are at least in the performance category of the new Mustang HO's. Not Ferrari's but hey, they are 25+ years old. You gotta have both.

The outriggers? There is a Harley parked at the hospital where I work that has a set of these. Ingenious and very well enginered. And they are removable when you get past the training wheel phase :). You have received a very fine gift.

I have often considered getting an old silverwing. they pop up used quite often it seems. It seems like an ideal ride actaully. I also like the Pacific Coast which is sort of the same thing only newer.

i am intrigued by the new silverwing megascooters too. So many bikes... so little money....

thanks for your comments on the goldwng ride. i have only ridden this one with the training wheels, eventually I will take them off most likely.

At least with them on I do not have to worry about dropping it in the garage.

i also thought it might make an ideal side car rig in the future.

Then I would have storage space for my tuba!!!

lol, i considered buying an old gold wing, 83 i think, where it doesnt quit look like a boat, just a beastof a bike, and stripping it down, and seeing if i could make it fast.. that looks really nice, almost like new!

You don't think she'd be better off in the passenger's seat than tied to the trailer's luggage rack?
