I would like to do a thorough cleaning of the damper and spring. How do I remove the spring? I was thinking of compressing the suspension with a ratchet strap then looping a nylon rope through the spring. Release the strap and remove the retainer. Do you think this will work and safe?

well it sounds safer than my method that uses a board your belly and a vice
but figure out how to get them back together first

They're not all that stiff. Make sure they're at the lowest preload setting, set the bottom of the shock on a board grab the top few coils and MASH. Have a helper retrieve the retaining collar. Assembly is the reverse of disassembly. I installed the new, heavier springs on my new Progressive shocks the same way. They're not so stiff they can't simply be "muscled."

Progressive makes a simple shock spring compressor

    That looks like this:

Looks like it could be easily duplicated with hardware at home....

If you have a bench vice, a couple of bar clamps, and some wire, you can pull down the spring and get the keepers out. That's the method I've used on several shocks.
