I had a similar problem with an older XJ a while back. Turned out that the fuel line had come off the carb. Something to check.

    Good luck,

This may not apply on your bike, but check the petcock. My 81 XJ has an ON, RES, and PRI. If it's set to PRI it dumps fuel.

Those intake boots between the carbs and the jugs are expensive.

Can anyone tell me what ON, RES and PRI mean? I assume ON is on, RES is reserve, but what is PRI?

If your petcock is working correctly it will only flow fuel with vacuum applied in the on and res setting, when put in the prime position it will flow freely.

I'd say it's not a bad idea. Depending on where the bike was ridden previously it could be kinda gummed up.

The previous owner of my XJ rode the bike in S. Dakota for about a year, then let the bike sit for almost a year and a half. The dirt and dust had settled with the gas in the carbs and literally formed clay inside the carbs.

I've little experience with such things and I needed the bike running ASAP (it's my only transportation) so I brought it to a garage. Took the mechanic 6 hours total to strip the carbs, power wash the entire assembly and put it back together.
