I bought a 2008 Kawasaki Z1000 about two months ago, but I still ride and enjoy my '85 Maxim X more :)

    Don't tell the Z1000 guys!

When I test drove the Z1000, I couldn't believe how smooth everything was and how much low end torque the thing had. Even the seating position felt right...so I haggled with the salesman a bit, got him down about a grand and I wound up taking this thing home.

But after the excitement wore off, I went back into the garage, fired up the Maxim X, grabbed my gear and took it for a 40 mile joyride - and I truly missed it. That thing is like a Cadillac compared to my new sportbike. Don't get me wrong, I love my new bike and it's a BLAST to drive, but it's not nearly the cruiser that my Maxim is. After a 40 mile ride on the XJ, I'm ready for another 40 miles. After 40 miles on the Z, I'm rubbing my butt to try and get some sensation back into it.

But, so far, I have to say I'm more of fan of the Maxim. I still really haven't given my new bike a chance yet...in fact, I've only ridden the thing in below 40 degree temps and the excess gear adds too much bulk and weight to really have too much fun. And to think I was going to sell the Maxim...

LoL! Yep, still have it...it's only been about two and a half months since I bought the darn thing! At least give me one warm riding season before I decide it's not worth it!

But in all seriousness, I was looking for a fuel injected bike so to do some tuning on. I've been into tuning cars since I was 18 and thought it would be kind of cool to try it out on a bike. Yea, I probably should have looked at something older (and without a warranty), but I made the mistake of walking into an enormous cycle dealership with almost every bike imaginable on hand...it was like a big kids toy store!

I was about ready to drop the Maxim from my insurance policy until I realized I get a pretty nice multi-cycle discount and keeping both bikes on the plan would only mean a couple hundred more a year...chump change at this point. So I'm here to stay, although I've tossed around the idea of letting my girlfriend take the Maxim since her Rebel dropped a valve and imploded her engine...vehicle number 3 on my fix-it list.

She had a Rebel? She engineered that valve failure so she could ride your Maxim. No question.

On the one hand, that's a pretty sharp girl. You should probably marry her quick.

On the other hand, that doesn't mean she should ride your Maxim. Get her one of her own. ;)

I agree about the newer sportbikes. Quick. Nimble. Powerful. Fun. Not good for long rides. The Maxim feels heavy and clunky at first, but 50 miles later and you don't feel like you've been beaten with a club like on a CBR.

Still has the Rebel - just down a cylinder. Apparently it's not all too uncommon for the valves to stick open and since they are interference engines...well, the rest is history...Her bike only has about 1800 miles on it. There were reports of the stuck valve syndrome on a bike that just rolled off the dealer lot and another with only about 300 miles on it.

Marry her? Ha...we've got a ways to go before anything like that'll happen. I just finished graduate school and she's still an undergrad we've still got plenty of time to figure out what we're doing...also plenty of time to fix the engine on that Rebel...

Oh, to be young again and think you have all the time in the world for things...

What does graduate school have to do with anything? You can't be married and get a degree? It's cheaper to be married, you know. All kinds of tax breaks and cheaper insurance and stuff.

Being married rules. GETTING married sucks. I advise visiting a Justice of the Peace on a quiet weekend in February and tell no one until next year.

I was simply using my recent graduation and her still being in school as a measure of where we are at in our lives. Yes, you can be married and get a degree - I had a couple of friends do just that, but that's not what neither her nor I want at the moment. She's not going anywhere (that I know of), so I'm not going to be in a big rush to snatch her up and claim her mine forever and I especially won't do it with the intent of getting cheaper insurance rates and tax breaks, although I jokingly told her that if she married me, I would give her the savings in taxes I earned that year! She didn't think it was nearly as funny as I did...oh well.

But, enough of my personal life and back on topic!

My brother rides a Z1000 as well. That bike is a lot of fun. When go riding together, sometimes we trade off so I get to play a lil bit myself. (Hard to Wheelie a Sportster with 14"apes 8O ). The Z makes some awesome smooth power. Oh and if you cut 5" off the exhaust and re-weld the caps on it sounds good and really wakes it up!! I did it on his and it suprised me with the difference.
