I have been dinkering with the carbs on my wife's XJ650J and have gotten it to run alot better than when we bought it. I have been adjusting on the air screws(the ones that you sync with) and mixture screws. By using the plug chop method I am fairly close. So yesterday I get my Haynes manual in the mail and it says basically Dont mess with them. Too late I already did. And upon further research, I should have kept up with where they started out. Am I ok or did I seriously goof up?

The Mixture screws on the top of the carbs require tweaking. The screws on the throttle shafts for adjusting Sync are only to be adjusted with the proper gauges connected so the engine is synced to the carbs.

Once you clean the carbs all bets are off. You are starting with a clean slate.

If you are getting good chops and its running well you have just successfully done what you could have paid a mechanic to totally screw up.

Congrats on getting the bike running better than you found it. That is goal.

This thing ran like crap!!! I drove 400 mile to pick it up and it turns out not the bike it was represented to be. But its getting there. Carbs were pretty bad out of tune still got probs with #3 being fat. Hopefully after the cleaning job Ill be able to get it right. I also found out that fuse block problems will also cause troubles as well. so while she is down getting carbs worked over its gonna get a new fuse block as well. Thank you all for the info, and motivation.

Careful or you'll get your stuff before you order it. Chacal has been known to do that...
