I been a lurker here for awhile. Been chopping a 81 xj650. Had alot of help from this forum.

I havent done anything since 7/08 because I am waiting for my tank to be finished. My buddy is rewelding the bung on the left hand side of the tank.

Very nice job there! Quite the modding!

BTW - what'd you do with the stock exhaust? I happen to need a stock setup....

Ha, Thanks for the comments! I was seriously inspired by the "stock to bobber on a budget" project by crath. I know my bike doesnt look like his but I did "borrow" some of his ideas. Man, is this board great!

If you looked at the pics in the gallery, some of them were deceptive. The bike looks really clean before I tore her down, but the reality is that rust had overtaken the mufflers and had started on the frame. Luckily I save the frame but the exhaust was pretty much toast. All I am really going to do now is rebuild and jet the carbs, mount the sportster tank, and ride til it gets too cold. Then I am going to tear her down and paint the frame, grind off some old mounts, and add a fake oil tank (or something comparable) for the rectifier, CDI, and solenoid. I have a new ammo box. prolly end up just using that again, but much prettier for the final version.

I have a buttload of parts I am dying to get rid of. If you need something, please let me know.. I will sell it cheap, maybe even give it away.

    Thanks for lookin!

That looks like my motor, the non YICS kind.
Was that stock on the '81 maxim?

So after having to buy new carbs. I have her running. Running pretty damn smooth, could probably be better but been ridin her for a week now. I still have alot to do but wanted to get some miles in before it gets too cold. Heres she is completely ridable. Excuse the bare spots on the frame... i am going to paint it, just not now. Im going to strut that fender and I got whitewalls ready to go on.

Just want to say thanks to everyone for bailing me out of a couple of jams. A few people I have to mention by name.

Crath - Thanks for the ideas and thanks for all the jet and tuning info. We have about the same setup so that came in hella helpful.

Chacal - Thanks for the great deals on parts and fast shipping.

Wvninja - Thanks for the killer deal on the carbs, I finally got em going pretty decent. Still think they need shaft seals.

Gamaru Kevineleven and RickCoMatic - Technical info. I completely wired this bike from end to end with gamarus wiring diagram. RickCo's a huge asset to this site... the man knows his poop. I learned alot by reading KEvins posts also.

If I forgot anyone sorry... this site is awesome.

Thanks! I was shooting for a bike like craths but knew the 650 is way too small for me without the apes. It actually fits pretty sitting up like that. I will have some more pics with the whitewalls and ender struts soon. After a few months I will have some of her painted. I have to ride now.. been killing me all summer.

Thanks for the compliments, I am really enjoying it. Will be alot better once it warms up!!

Here is the jetting info with part numbers from chacal. I must credit Crath for this info. He has the same setup and it has worked great for both of us.

HCP876 aftermarket brass #118 MAIN FUEL JET
    set of four @ $11
HCP6326 aftermarket brass #42 PILOT FUEL JET
    set of four @ $19
HCP12SET4 Hitachi carbs main fuel jet spacer washer
    set of four @ $19

I have unifilter PK82 pods and am running straight headers wrapped in heat wrap.

Runs great.. I am replacing carbs now because the thottle shaft have worn out the holes the bodies and it sucks air when warm. The jetting was perfect. Rode all last summer with it in this configuration.

Great looking build, think you really hit that classic bobber look.

Did you fab or buy those forward controls?

Hey man was the frame already welded? Im pretty new to this stuff but ya gotta start somwhere hey.

I picked up a 82 maxim650 at the end of last summer. Its real ugly and perfect for a bobber project I would think. I love the look of your ride and have been lookin at a few different frame styles. Couple questions-

    1:
What did you use to weld the frame.... Mig or Tig? (as I said totally new but trying to learn.)

    2:
Do you have any pics or measurments to where you chopped?

    Thanx mate
Once again, one of the nicer bikes ive seen.

DonJuan.. i bought the forward controls from tcbroschoppers.com. They are expensive. looking back, i wished i had fabbed them. I just didnt know where to start. I would be glad to take some close ups so you can get the idea and maybe fab em.

Bugeater... I totally stole the idea from a user on the board named crath. I chopped it just like he did, then added my own extras. Do a search for "stock to bobber on a budget and read the entire thread. I printed every single page of his thread and emailed him to get his jetting info. Great guy. I used a 135 mig welder and 1" OD tubing. MY buddy and I eyballed it and raised it just enough so the shaft wouldnt rub.

Thanks for the compliments. I will be glad to answer any questions for you! good luck.

    Great man.
I will try to keep the annoying newb questions to a minimum!!!

I got this maxim off a buddy last year (pics in gallery) who learned on it and he droped it pretty good. It was already in pretty ruff shape and dident run to well but the price was right and I was lookin for a bike to learn how to wrench on.

It was barley runnin when I got it off him and after he dumped it we had a bit of a problem with fuel coming out the air cleaner but it seemed to fix that one on its own!!! Its been sitting for a bit now so I am gonna try to strip the carbs and give it a good once over. Once I get it running really well im gonna get myself a welder and see how bad I can mess this thing up!!!!!

I will let ya know how it goes.

P.s. I checked out Craths page there. You might have used a few ideas from his post but you created a totally different bike. You guys easily have the nicest bikes on the site ive seen this far. Keep up the good work.

    Thanx Again

How did you wrap the exhaust? I've seen lots of pics of it being done, but haven't really found a detailed explanation of the process.

I'd like to do it on mine, just because the pipes look disgusting...but can you wrap them if there is rust/pitting on the chrome? What's the lifetime like if you do?

I want to publicly say thanks to Tyler93. I bought a set of carbs from him and they worked perfectly. This guy has alot of parts he is trying to sell and I will vouch for him. He shipped my parts fast and they were perfect.

Heres a quick vid of my bike running and I give a shout out to Chacal and Tyler93. Sorry Crath, you're shoutout is next ha!!

Thanks all. Here is my vid.

Efltat, where did you get the sportster tank from. Do you know where I can find one for my maxim. Also how is the tank mounted on? Any advice is greatly appreciated, Im new to this so any help is great. Thanks man!

I welded mounts for the tank. It sits flat on the frame so no mod is really needed to tank mounts. Its an easy mount. A piece of tube steel on the front where the front of the tank goes and a flat piece on the back for the bolt to go in from under the tank.

Any sportster tank will work. You can get em on egay all day long for 99$ (sometimes less).

That tank is off an 81 Ironhead sportster.

I couldnt begin to say how many hours. Looking back, I could have done it in about half the time if I had known better what I was doing.

It took approximately 3 months of pretty much working 3 hours a night. I probably had around 2100 (I paid 900 for it) including the price of the bike. But I made over 600 bucks selling all the crap I took off it.

Thats very rough. I didnt keep up with it like I should have. I have found a very good deal on one of these near my house. I may be about to do another. :)

Eflat, hey is there any way you can snap a close up picture of the way your tank sits in the front and in the back. My tank came in on Tuesday and just couldn't figure out how you mounted it or even how it sits. My tank either is to high in the front or does not even sit flat in the back. Thanks man!
