well looks like I have to remove the carbs from my 83' Maxim. Just picked up the bike and its been sitting for a year or so. I want to clean the bowls etc out really well. At least he drained the gas before he put it away. I know that #2 float is stuck, I put it on prime and had some gas come out of the airbox drain hose. I also saw gas coming out at the boot at #2 just before the airbox. So,,,how hard is it to remove all the carbs? Could someone quickly explain the easiest way to get them out / off?
    Thanks, BOOMER

Depends on the bike - they are pretty easy but the 700x has less working room than my 650.

Update your signature with your bike details so we won;t keep asking ;)

In general if your boots to the air box are still fairly flexible you loosen the clamp and push them back into the air box. Disconnect your throttle and enrichment cables and move or disconnect the clutch cable. Loosen the manifold clamps and pull the carbs back (hammer handle can help you pry) . Then slide them out.

Of course you need to remove your tank first.

I just finished stripping mine down for the first time. I was really picky and kept everything numbered and in order. I think thats a good habit to get into. I even took step by step pics if you want them.

I really suggest getting the hayes catalog if your gonna attempt it. Makes it pretty strait forward.

    Hope it helps.

Can someone please tell me how to insert a hyperlink into the text of a message to point someone to a particular FAQ etc? I sometimes have enough time at work to go through the forum posts, and while I don't have the expertise to tell someone how to fix something I have learned to navigate the FAQ's and would like to be able to point someone there for help.

    Bugeater,

It looks like you have done a very careful job of disassembling your carbs for cleaning. If you would like to take advantge of information from XJ gurus on this site take a look at the FAQ's in the Forums section of this site.

Go to the left margin and find Forums(it is under the heading Community almost at the top of the page).

Click on Forums and find on the next page XJ FAQ Suggestions.

Click on the title and go to page 2. There you will find

"Clean Your Own Carbs!" Old School Method by: Rick Massey.

Click on this link and hang on. There is a wealth of information, warnings, gotchas, techniques, etc. for cleaning your carbs. Much of this information likely came from the years of experience Mr. Massey and others have invested in restoring and maintaining these bikes.

Also of interest on page 1 is HOW TO: Bench-synch your carbs by Gamuru.
Again, Page 1 HOW TO: Clean the Enrichment Circuit Well by Gamuru

Poke around in this section and take advantage of the millions of man years (sorry guys) of experience these guys are handing out to us newer guys for free. FAQ is my favorite part of XJBikes.

Good luck and have a great time!

    HAHAHA to funny!!!

I just read Mr, Massyes write up as you were sending me there!!! Man you wernt kidding thats a lot of info for one sitting. Wish I would have read that before I started my strip down.

I havent been able to stay off this site since I discovered it. So much knowledge flyin around I just cant stop reading!!!!

Hey WAMAXIM do you know how I can post pics on a thread? I tried to add my pics to my gallery but I can only fit like 5 on there till my space fills up. I think they could really help with the carb strip down questions but I cant seem to figure out how to post them up anywhere.

    Thanx man

    Bugeater,

You saw my plea for help putting hyperlinks in text at the start of my reply to you. I'm sure I'm the wrong guy to answer your question but I think I can point you in the right direction. Go back to the forums section like before and drop down 5 lines from the FAQ section to the area marked Test Zone. I think this is the place where you will find your answers. It will show you how to post pics, etc.

I know what you mean about this site. It is addictive. It's not often you find this much knowledge freely shared amongst people with similar interests. Good luck!

mine on my cb750 was pretty easy.... just loosened up all the clamps on tall the hoses, ratchet strappped the airbox back and tight as it could get, used the hair dryer on the rubber tobes that connect the carbs to the engine, and had my dad yank on one side, i yanked on the other, blam! came off!..... throttle cable was a pain though... sure it will be lots of fun to get it back on!

For hyper links just copy and paste the URL of the post you want to reference.

I open another instance of the site, find what I want and paste it in. I also took the links I need most and put them in a text doc so I can just paste them out of there.

Pictures have to be 500x500 pixels max. Resize them using anything you like. I use Infranview a freebee that is easy to use. If you are using the quick response at the bottom of the forum hit preview then you will see an add attachment box. Should be easy from there.

Thank you Bill, the IT(uh XJ) wizard. I did the same thing. I opened two instances of XJBikes, copied the shortcut and pasted it in the text and it came out with the url but not the fancy blue hyperlink. I now see that it turns blue at the preview stage. Thanks for your help
