It may be a dumb question and I've searched with no success. Are there any upgrades from the factory seat on my '82 XJ550 Maxim? I'd find it hard to believe that there are any companies still producing such things, but I'm just curious to see if anyone has one or has any ideas of what might swap from other bikes.

Take a look at my white Seca in my gallery. I sent the stock seat to http://www.sargentcycle.com/custserv.htm and they refurbished it, eliminated the strap for me, and added the red welt. All for $119.00, SHIPPED. The workmanship is impeccable.

They also do custom work: "Atomic" foam, recontouring, grippy inserts, etc. I'm planning to send the seat from my project Seca for a little recontouring and additional foam as well.

    Schooter: I'm in Rochester.

Brent_bastien: I'm not sure the 650 seats fit the 550. I haven't found an article yet that says either way.

bigfitz52: Thanks a lot. I'll keep them in mind if I can't find a suitable upgrade for my seat.

I don't think the 650 seat will fit the 550, at least not without some mods to something. The 550's, both Seca and Max, tend to be in their own category.

Oh then it will for sure fit. All three years' 550 Maxims were the same, (as were all the Seca 550's) except the first year Max had something different about the front brake caliper. Seat, all the other bits, same-same. And the brake thing is based on the parts catalog, I'm not sure there is any difference.

You might think about getting a second seat and then modifying the worst of the two.
