Is there a K&N filter replacement for XJ bikes? I'd like to replace my Air filter with a custom after market one.

K&n does not carry one for my bike. You might want to check about yours. They do carry a general replacement that comes mitty close to mine. You might have to measure yours to find the one closets to yours. I myself have ordered the pods.
I am an old school hotrodder at heart and the pods increase performance extensively but they require re-jetting.

I would try the replacement K&N Stock Filter first before trying the pod filters. I have the K&N stock replacement in my bike right now and it works like a charm.

    Re: air filter

I have the pods that my bike came with still on it right now. While on dry pavement pods MIGHT give a performance advantage (there has been speculation that the middle cyls. don't get sufficent air), they are exposed to more dirt, water, and grime than a filter in a box ever will be. A wet filter doesn't breathe.

Sometimes I wish that the PO would have left the box.

    Re: air filter

If you do replace your airfilter with a K&N - you'll have to rejet your bike as the increased airflow will impact your mixtures.

Our bikes are tuned to the max as it is, adding the k&n will require new jets for your carbs. It'll increase HP by a few, it'll also use more fuel. :)

    Re: air filter

I replaced my stock paper filter with something like a K&N, but a different brand. Actually now that I think of it it's not so much like a K&N in that it doesn't use oil. Anyway it's a free-flowing type but it fits right in the stock airbox which was key for me.
I can check when I get home what brand it is. Somehow I think it begins with a D. Got at it a normal bike shop.

    Re: air filter

Due to unavailability of a replacement filter for my XJ550 here in Oz, I had to modify my old paper one. Bought a sheet of foam filter material from the bike shop and cut out the paper and put foam in instead. If the foam is cut slightly wider then it tucks neatly under the groove where the paper was and can be removed to be washed.

When I did it I totally dismantled the filter to remove the old glue and all the paper and just reglued the frame back together with five minute epoxy.

Works a treat and cost less than 20 bucks to do. Compared to 110 for a new paper one(which I can't get here) it is a good way to go. The foam will last for years with a qiuck wash every time I do an oil change.

    Cheers
    HG

    Re: air filter

Going with the K&N pods, Dynojet Stage 1 & 3, and free-flowing exhaust was necessary for me due to the lack of performance I felt my bike had. I have since narrowed the problems down to leaking carb shaft seals and weak coils. Even with those problems, the PO rode the bike after the upgrade, and commented "had he known" that's all it would have taken, he'd have kept the bike. He was impressed. As for using more fuel, not that noticable unless you really crank your wrist. And as for rain and dirt, the dirt actually has less of an effect on a K&N filter than on a regular paper filter, and the rain problem is just wrong. In the rain I actually think I get better gas mileage. I cut out the whole front of the old air box with a Dremel to facilitate air flow and ease of removing the filters. I religiously clean and re-oil them every month. YMMV...

    Re: air filter

I put a K&N filter on my '83 750 K. It is the same fit as the stock filter but cost me $46 USD. No rejetting required. The filter does increase air flow so a check with colortune could help. I had rebuilt me carbs and subsequently synced them to the new filter. Therefore I have no experience of going from stock filter straight to a K&N. But a 1/4 turn out on the mixtrue screws should be all that's needed if the bike hesitates any.

    Seperate Air Filters.

I saw a picture this morning of an XJ650 with a small filter for each carb, eliminating the air box. Does anybody know which filter set up i kneed to do this mod?
    thanks

    Re: Seperate Air Filters.

    Edmond;
Keep in mind by installing pods you will need to re-jet your carbs, because the pods allow more air flow. I don't know all the details of this but I'm sure someone will jump in that knows more on the subject than I. Good luck.

I'm no mechanic ny any means, so as soon as I install the pods I'll be putting it ij the shop to be rejetted and such. Ran a little iffy today for the first time, as if fuel starved. I'll have the mech check that out too.

So far the best (cheapest place I've found is here: http://www.martelbrothes.com enter part # R-1060 PArt # RC-1060 will also work. it has the metal cap instead of rubber.
    Hope this helps.

I cut out the front of the airbox with a dremel. Then I smoothed out the plastic so there were no sharp edges. My pods are kind of stealth. I didn't want them to be too obvious. Remember to clean them with soap and water, dry them, and reoil them 2-3 times during the riding season. The K&N care kit can be found in most auto parts stores.

You will need a free-flow exhaust to capture the full benefit of the pods and rejetting.

If you are taking it to a shop, they will jet it for what you have now, but if you change the exhaust it will have to be rejetted again.
