So, I put my laptop up on craigslist for sale, trying to get $600 for it. Get a reply, guys says he want to buy it, but wants it shipped. I ask where, he says New Jersey. Then I get this email today:

And of course, the money isn't really in my account, as this is a fake email. I am SO SICK OF THESE SCAMMERS!!! I can't sell this stupid laptop, or my stereo online, because everytime I do, I get a scammer emailing me, or winning an ebay auction!!!! They need to burn in hell!

Shameless plug while I'm ranting, anyone want a Dell Inspiron 8600?

They are very devious those pests. They are just annoying. Hvnbnd, if the money is in the account, you should be good to go. The obvious tip off here is the gentleman's address in Nigeria, a known hotspot for scammers and online thieves. The law is fairly lax there and there is very little effort to close them down as of yet. There was a fairly lengthy write up about the state of things down there by a fellow running a website banterist.com. Be warned, he is wity and funny, you'll get stuck reading it for a while if you do visit.

Most common tip offs(based on my own personal experience, and readings):

Buyer wants to have the item picked up by fedex, and he pays for the shipping.
Buyer wants to send a money order through an 'escrow' service, for the MO to be held until the buyer recieves the goods.
    Buyer is in Nigeria.
Buyer offers to pay well over what the item is worth, and expects a MO sent back to him for the over payment, with the sellers goods.

I have recieved quite a few emails on electronic goods that I've tried to sell by these hack jobs. A reasonably intelligent person, that is PAYING ATTENTION, can catch these guys. They really aren't that good of a scam artists, but they prey upon people that don't pay attention, or don't think out the course of things. As long as you manage your money like a business would, you are fine. No money in my pocket, no goods to your door! I haven't run into them as acting as a seller, but I'm sure there are some out there.

That really sux. I know they are everywhere on the dating sites (not that I am on one of those or anything ) <wink>, but they, the Nigerians send e-mails all the time posing as someone else. These are easy to spot too, as they give you a yahoo messenger address in the first e-mail. They have nice profiles with pics of people that are only in magazines (i.e. would not be dating me). They usually say they are widowed and there is very little info in their profile.

    SCAMMERS SUCK!!!!!!!!

    Is suck a bad word?

    Okay........SCAMMERS are RUDE!

I put "I don't sell to people without 15 positive feedbacks" right in my auction and I haven't been screwed since. If somebody with less bids I just cancel it. Always look at feedback and if the guy changed his identity recently.
