Bikes ride able after several months, and the weather is finally warming up. So I buy some ins and head to the DMV only for them to tell me they wont switch the title without a bill of sale and I have no way to find this guy, I actually think he got deported. So really no options after buying and putting all this money into it.... think i may try another dmv

Exactly what is a Bill of Sale anyway? If the PO has been deported, or otherwise unavailable, couldn't this type of thing be, ya know, fudged a little?

I have a rolling frame with clean title. The PO signed it. I have not registered it but I do have the signed title. Its a 650 Max.

A bill of sale can be as simple as having a handwritten peice of paper with the date of sale, make, model, year, vin, buyers and sellers name and addresses, amount, and signatures. You should have all the seller's info from the title. My suggestion is to type all the info out and then sign your name at the bottom and then sign the seller's name copying the one on the title as best you can. Take that and the title to the dmv and there shouldn't be a problem. One other note, make the amount low - some states charge sales tax based on that amount (but be sure it's not ridiculous, like $5).

There may be something stamped somewhere else besides neck. We should get chacal and/or Ricko to chime in.

About the only things I want off the bike now are the forks and the front brake stuff. If you really want it, it can be rolled to you and you can carve it up. Sushi has expressed interest in the engine to satisfy his curiosity about replacing the shift guide without cracking the engine.

Dude, I'm in Maryland same as you and I did NOT have to present a notarized bill of sale when I recently titled and tagged my bike. Try another DMV.

Yeah, I've had bills of sale that were written on a scrap piece of paper.

I've also had a dumb seller sign the title in the buyers section. I just had to re-sign it in the sellers section and then fill out the buyers end.

I dunno if the DMVs are just lax here in WI or what, but I think youll get along fine with a hand written note. Its no big deal!

Also like it was said before put it for cheap. I had the seller put mine as 100 bucks. 5 dollars tax. :p

in CT you would need to pay to do a lost title search, and go from there. its not a fun process.

I've done exactly this with no problem.
The only reason NY wants one on a bike this old is for tax.
If I didn't have one they would charge me blue book value on the tax.

I bought my bike from a guy who had been dead for 2 months! I wrote out the bill of sale, obviously making it out for a date before he died. His girlfriend however thought it would be smart to fill out the title for me and sign her dead boyfriends name, and put the actual date I bought the bike from her. Figured I'd try it anyway and nobody caught on that a dead guy signed title over to me!

I did not have a bill of sale for my 650 Max.
    The PO signed the title.

I use the DMV on RT1 just south of Laurel.

If your title is not filled out on the back, fill it out yourself and find someone to sign the guy's name.

no the back is all filled out and signed, they are saying cus he kinda double over the zero on 500 they cant read it to transfer it and i need a notarized bill of sale which of course i cant get unless i find a notary to sign it without both us present(unlikely)

gonna try a dif dmv then glen burnie or title transfer place and if that doesnt work guess my only other option would be get that neck from u half and start swapping.

Def try the one just south of Laurel on RT 1. Maybe try to make the back of the title look a little neater if you can.

I totally messed up mine by putting the wrong thing in the wrong boxes and they yelled at me for it and I apologized and told them I had never done this before which I had not. A little grovelling goes a long way.

Be careful with under reporting sales price. In the state of Washington any value that is lower than the value the state thinks it's worth is reviewed and can be denied. God forbid they contact the seller and the idiot comes clean! Just pay the tax and avoid the possibility of felonmy charges. States get a little testy with titles and taxes. If it takes a hundred bucks tax to avoid a life prison sentence(ok probably not a LIFE sentence) why run the risk.

all i had was the registration on the bike in some one else name

the bike was not on book for over 7 years

all i have to do now is go to the CHP and get a VIN and ENGINE verification

but the bike is in my name as of yesterday i only had to pay $134.00

When I got my seca I put on the title when I went to register it that I paid $1. I paid $0.07 in tax, bought my plate, walked out put the plate on and rode off a happy camper.

If they gave you crap because part of what he filled out is hard to read, I would try another DMV. I couldn't read anything other than the typed parts of my title and had no issues registering here in indiana, because the typed VIN matched the one stamped on the neck.

I avoid Glen Bernie DMV at all costs.
Go to the DMV on Route 1 and call me in the morning.

ah ha! from the mva website here in MD
    http://mva.state.md.us/VehicleServ/REG/ ... edvehicles

Proof of purchase price - This should be a bill of sale signed by both the buyer(s) and seller(s). The bill of sale must be notarized if the following conditions apply:

    * the vehicle is less than 7 years old; and
    * the purchase price is at least $500 below the book value; and
    * the new owner (buyer) wants to base the excise tax calculation (6% of the vehicle's value) on the sale price rather than the book value.

So Im going to one of those title/tag places tomorrow a buddy recommended b4 class, but it appears I dont need a notarized bill of sale cus they could go off blue book value if need be(which kbb says $1005). Only doing that instead of rt 1 Half because of location and time during the weekdays.

Hopefully I will be able to post good news tomorrow.

Sounds like you owe the DMV $50-$60.
    Hope it works out.

Interesting thread. North Carolina does not charge sales tax on used vehicles sold person to person (non-retail). Nor do they care about the sales price. You do of course have to pay for title/tags/registration. They charge property tax based on their opinion of the value. If you want to dispute it as being assessed too high you can submit an appeal. But on a 20 year old bike the assessed value might be $500.00 which gives you a very small property tax which is not worth worrying about.

I went to the MVA in Essex, MD last year. No bill of sale. I got historic tags on mine. I forget what it cost exactly but it was about a couple hundred between tax, tags and title fees.

Ended up going to Fred's Tag and Title in cockeysville (was on my way home from work this week). They took the title and my money but because I wanted historic tags got to pick up tomorrow instead of walking out with tag and registration today.

But so glad they did, was really scurred there for a minute.

When I went to plate my Norton last year I couldn't find the pre-printed thing they sent me two years' previous (it had been off the road for a couple of years) so they wouldn't do it, they wanted to see the title, which I can't find. I came up with an old registration, and that was good enough. Of course it is and always has been my bike; I just can't actually prove it apparently.

In Michigan we pay 6% sales tax. I usually fudge "down" a bit, say from $800 to $400, but never do the $1 thing. That being said, I have transferred cars between family members before, and THEY told ME to put down $1, it couldn't be "free." Go figure.
