So I have my new bars on, throttle assembly and master cylnder gave me no problem at all...but the left grip is stuck firmly to the old bar.

I'm assuming it's glued in place and nothing short of cutting it open will make it budge.

Or maybe I'm just doing it wrong...

It is possible that that handle grip has been cemented into place. Try to peel the end back. If you see signs of adhesive, you've two options. Cut it off or use chemical strippers to soften the adhesive (messy and takes a bit of time. I would suggest trying to snake a WD40 red straw down between the bar and grip (it isn't that destructive and usually allows for the reuse of the old item) and give it a shot. There is specially formulated grip adhesive remover but unless you know exactly which adhesive was used, your out of luck. Hope you are successful in your efforts.

I would try a heat gun first. They work wonders on adhesives, and general loosening of things.

i cut it down the middle, lifted it a bit and hit the hell out of it with a hammer until it came loose.

No clue how I'm getting back on there in a safe fashion yet...ill worry about it when the headlight and fairings done....and if i can remember where the front blinker plugs go...

I read a method for removing grips without damage the other day. While changing bars on the XS we had trouble removing the left grip as well so thought I would give it a try.

Take a syringe(or compatible squirter) and fill with water, use to squirt under the grip from the bar end. Work the water in a bit and it will slide off with ease.

Spray hairspray on the new bar before refitting.

I was able to superglue the plastic and foam cover back togather. I did the hairspray trick on the bar and the grip seems firmly in place.

I just need it to hold out for two weeks until I have the cash for some new ones.

    Thanks for the tips :D

Compressed air works great as well, If you have access to a compressor.

I have this wonderful mental image of me cramming the air gun into the handlebar and launching the grip across the street....

I'll get my fathers compressor next time :D

There's a mental picture. I can just see it now. Newsflash, local resident felled by errant grip, authorities still baffled.
