I am trying to replace a shift fork in my 1983 xj750 seca, and i have the entire top of the engine already removed. I have all bolts holding the crankcase halves removed as well. When I try to remove the top have, the primary chain (?) that connects to the generator holds the crank shaft to the top of the case. How do I remove this? How do I get the two halves to come apart? Any help will be appreciated and I will be posting pictures of the process.
    Thanks

I believe you flip it upside down and take the bottom off. At least that's the procedure with the 550's can't imagine it would be too different.

All I needed was a little more daring. Keep yanking and you figure out, unlike all the other engines I have cracked, the crank stays in the top half for the entire ride. Oh well, thanks for your help. I will post pictures of my endeavor and hopefully help someone else out there.

Here's an interesting bit that I could not find anywhere:
I was told I had a bent shift fork. Looking at part blow-outs, there are three shift forks, so which one. Could not find out which one anywhere. Here it is: if you are having a slipping second gear it is SHIFT FORK 1.

    More to come.

Anyone now where I can find a more affordable FORK, SHIFT 1 (PN:284008-001) than bikebandit.com. I know its not bad considering, but $51 seems too much for what the part is.
    Thanks again.

It could also be worn dogs on the gears more things can cause the 2nd gear issue than just a bent fork.

forgive my anxious question, but you know how it is to have it all apart and not knowing really what you are doing.

I was advised to also replace the primary chain guide and starter pins while I was in there. I found the primary chain guide (for the starter), but what are the pins? I can't seem to determine this.

    As always, thanks.

That must be a BB part number, I'm showing SKU: 4H7-18511-01-00
FORK, SHIFT 1 available from Yamaha at a list price of $40.57. That's through the on-line Yamaha dealer I get stuff from that chacal doesn't have. Did you check with chacal? If he has it he'll have it for less. If not:

Really? 8O Then you've probably been paying too much. If he doesn't have the shift fork new, he will probably have a good used one.

Since your engine is torn down to "parade rest", definitely replace that chain guide. Many of us are having bits of ours breaking off, jamming up our shift mechanisms. It's only a matter of time after that before it fails completely.
