new guy!

hey there, fellas!
i just picked up my first bike yesterday, an '86 xj700x for $500 off a friends dad.
it needs a little bit of work, mostly cosmetic (it's been a first bike to a few before me, if you catch my drift) but it's been VERY well maintained.

i'm wicked excited and can't wait to learn what you guys have to teach me!

I'm bringing back an "X" to life, and didn't really appreciate how rare they are when I found it. Congrats on finding a unique bike.

If you want to get your hands on a service manual, I picked one up off of repairmanual.com. I think chacal on this board also has them.

 

i was actually given a service manual that my buddy had picked up about 6 months ago, and didn't even crease the spine of the book.
i was reading through it last night, it's a pretty great resource.
i found maxim-x last night, that's also pretty great. the guy i bought my x from isn't very web savvy, so he's not yet aware of the huge cult following of these bikes, he was just talking about it like it was the bike he bought to get used to before he "upgraded" to a heritage softtail.
i'm heading down to c&e yamaha tomorrow to pick up a clutch cable, and hopefully the weather here will give me a few warm days so i can get some seat time!

 

That's funny. I have been out of bikes for several years and wanted to get back to them. I always wanted a Harley, but I had never really looked at them. I did my research, and came to the conclusion that owning a Harley bike was not for me.

Then, I was immediately drawn and sucked back into the bikes of the 80's. I love them today as much as I did seeing them roll out when they were new. They really have heart and soul.
