After rebuilding the carbs I got my 550SECA running (barely).
Which is next: idle mixture adjustment, or carb sync?
Right now it goes up to 3000 rpm for 30 scnds, then down to 1500 for 15 scnds, then back up to 3000. If I run it up to 5000 for a little, it will settle down to 1500 for a little, then go back up to 3000.
The #3 & 4 plugs look clean to whitish, the #1 & 2 plugs look oily black.
Any clues for what to do next?

Sounds like a Hunting Idle, the plugs should not be black and oily though.
    And 3 & 4 are too lean.
A hunting idle like that sounds like a vacuum leak...

DId you bench sync? If so you'll need to get a propane tourch. Turn the gas on and go around the carbs. If the idle smoothes out your finding the vacuum leak. How are the carb manifolds?

To answer your actual question: CLEAN; Bench-sync; vacuum sync; idle mix tweak/tune/colortune/plug read/chop/read/repeat.

Thanks Fitz, I'll look for a vacuum leak too.

My bike ran like crap after a carb cleaning and bench sync.
The actual synch while running made it purr like a kitten.
I did not have the wandering idle, though. It does sound like you have air getting in where it should not.

just make sure there is no heat coming from the propane torch first!!! DO NOT LIGHT IT!!! I hate it when people come back saying that they need a new bike because they torched it while looking for a vacuum leak... Hey at least the bike FIRED right up :) Sorry trying to cheer myself up..
