I got the bike off craigslist here in Orangevale at the end of the summer for $450 with only 18xxx miles on it. I hate stock anything so I've finaly started changing things a bit.

    Done
I got the rear fender off a 1985 honda

I got rid of the giant stock turn signals

I got a chrome guage cluster off of a 1981 yamaha somthing but I havn't put it on yet

I am also going to start TODAY, trying to strip all of the paint off of the wheels and polish them. Has anyone ever polished the stock alluminum wheels on their maxim?

    In the works

I plan to get a round chrome headlight

Chrome engine/crash bars (Where can I buy these? anyone know?)

A Stage 3 jet kit for the carbs with the k&N individual air filters

Aftermarket chrome exhaust (I've heard about a company named "Jardine" I think. Anyone know where a good place to get exhaust is?)

I replaced the seat with a snall spring seat but I don't like it so I'm going to get a seat made I think.

and I'm going to make custom side covers.

Please let me know of good places to buy parts or good modification and performance ideas. This is not only my first bike build, but my first bike! So, I'm learning as I go and I can use all the help I can get.

    1. for all maxim and seca parts..... talk to our parts guy here chacel, he's got his own section of the forum.
    2. Ebay has alot of the aftermarket exhausts, ill try to name some : Jardine, kerker, vance and hines, umm and theres some generic ones too.
    3. if you're making custom side covers.... dont molest the origionals... you can probably get 100 easy out of them.
    4. a stage kit and pods or individual filters does NOT increase horse power, it moves the powerband around, but in most cases you lose power and spend HOURS trying to get it to work like stock. The pods are only reccommended for those who have frame mods and cant fit in the origional airbox, or someone wo really likes the look and has lots of time on their hands.
    5. Crash bars.... ebay them... dont be afraid of light rust, you can use the finest steel wool, 0000- i think, and pull off some pretty amaxing rust removal, i have on my cb750, then we spray diesel fuel to keep things from rusting, thats what i did on my cb, is take some diesel fuel, wipe the parts after you take the steel wool to it, because steel wool leaves behind ultra fine pieces of steel that rust..

    6. Good luck! and can we see some pics?!?!?!?

I'd realy like to find new chrome crach bars if they're out there. I'm just tired of dealing with rust and such althouth I know how to polish if I need to.
Does anyone have any insight as to what companies are good for exhaust or any to avoid?

I will deffinatly leave the stock side covers alone. I'm spending a decent amount of money on the bike but I am hopong to recover alot of it by selling all my take off parts.

I've heard alot of good things about the Stage 3 Jet kit on other websights. Where will it put the powerband? Will it effect being able to cruize at highway speeds bacuase I'm all about long rides.

Heres some pics so far. They're sort of in order from stock to current progress.

    Hi Ovvision:

Shoot-I just paid $1k for a Seca in Citrus Heights out near Sacramento. i think that is near you.

Maybe I got ripped. Oh well, seems in good condition.

I've been looking at a lot of them and there is a lot of crap for $1k.

I've seem alot of early 1980's Yamahas going for around $1000. I think I just got s killer deal. The guy I got it from got it for free from his uncle and didn't even clean it. It was perfect becuase I had just decided to start looking for my first motorcycle 2 weeks prior to buying it.

I pulled my wheels and polished the shiny bits, the tapped it off and sprayed the black bits. They look 100% more better and only took a day. (Already had them off for bearings and brakes so what the hey.)

I am in the process of trying to strip the black off and I'm hoping to polish the entire wheels! It's goin to be a pain in the ass, but if i finish it I think it will be bitchin. They realy are good looking wheels.

    Looks good...

I don't know what honda it's off, but ti's one piece. I think I'm going to lower the rear end 1 or 1.5 inches and then if it still doesn't look quite right I might cut a section out of the fender and weld it back up to shorten it.
