Beware of Scammers posing as sellers!!!

This is how this SCAM works:
A "seller" SCAMMER acquires someone’s credit card identity. Then he uses it to place fake ads. The purpose of the scam is to get you to send him a deposit for his imaginary motorcycle or other item. The SCAMMER will promise to sell you the motorcycle at a price that is way below the average value on that bike. Often they will tempt you by including shipping.

Sometimes these scams are easy to identify because the scammer does not want to talk to you by phone. They may give fake phone numbers or the phone number of the person whose identity they stole to place the ad. They want to deal only by email. However, it has been noticed that people who are running these scams have become so bold as to take phone calls and pose as the person whose identity they stole. The way to shut them down is to ask for their address because you want to send their motorcycle to a local dealer for an inspection. That usually stops them dead in their tracks.

I want our users to be forewarned and armed with the right information to do business on the Internet. The Internet provides you with the ability to reach out to the whole world. But it also allows international criminals access to you that they would never have had before. Be vigilant and educate yourself.

Yeah ads like these on CL really piss me off.

Luckily, at least in my area, they've been getting less and less. Mostly from good people flagging down the ads quickly.
Some of the things I've noticed as a trend in all the ads are:
    - They won't use the site's email, it's usually an aol account or something.
    - The pictures have been lifted off Ebay or something similar. (look for the little camera logo in the bottom corner of the pics).
    - The price is really low like sno sheriff mentioned.
    - Usually the pictures come from are html based instead of locally hosted. (IMG vs. PIC on craigslist.)

THANKS FOR THE HEADS UP. have noticed some ads like this and others who wanted their deposits first without wanting to give details and offer inspections so maybe it can work as a deposit scam only. just a thought

yep..there was a scam out here in Winnipeg..only with a snowmobile, price was great on it.But I knew I saw the add somewhere else.Since I am on Totallyamaha site..I have seen the same ad there. The guy wanted a deposite to hold the sled because a lot of people he said were interested.
Funny actually I PM'd the guy on TY website about this and he was stunned that someone stole his add and pics from the States and used it in a Winnipeg Kijiji site. Now that I have personally been involved in this..I know how these guys play..sneakylike. Beaware of SCAMMERS.Ask a lot of questions also and stump them.

I'm selling my old van, I have it up on CL for $600 and would you believe I got one of those "I'm out of town on business but I can send a cashier's check" scam emails. On a vehicle that's gonna sell for $500. Utterly amazing.
