What makes my bike crunch into second gear on upshift? It only does it going from first > second, not on downshift or any other gear changes.

Also, when I engage first gear, the bike lunges forward slightly.

    Thanks again.

You could try the clutch on the left side of the handlebar

Sounds like you might have some clutch wear? Xj has a wet clutch so oil has to be right level and viscosity

Sounds to me like you need to adjust that clutch cable. An out of adjustment clutch will cause the creeping in 1st gear when stopped. If you need info on how to, check the xjchat forum & do a search for clutch adjustment.
    Good luck

Is that what that lever on the LHS is for?

    Thanks harwell.

I would have thought if it was clutch wear or oil viscosity that it would have affected all the gear changes but when I think back on it - it doesn't happen every time, just nearly all of the time, and that would suggest some variable, like clutch adjustment perhaps......?

The lurching into first gear could also be incorrect clutch adjustment....?

    Any comments greatly appreciated.

When I first got my 650 Maxim I thought it was the roughest shifting scooter in the land. Then I noticed that the clutch and brake handles looked different from each other. In all my XS spare parts stuff I found a correct handle. Oh! Grasshopper! Shift much better now!

Yeah both symptoms sounds like clutch adjustment issues.

Wamaxim makes a good point with the lever. I got a dirt bike recently that had a bent clutch lever, and I couldn't get the clutch to adjust right. A new lever cleared it up, gave it the full range of motion.

    Thanks alaskazzr and wamaxim.

Clutch lever is good so I'll have a play with adjustment when the weekend comes again. There have been some comprehensive posts regarding clutch adjustment.

    Cheers.
