    Because im getting the itch to get a bike and bobber it or what ever, i was really inspired by cheesy's bike, just wondering if anyone knows of a site about building bobbers or whatever from older motorcycles

    You can buy a professionally built hard tail frame for $600 that comes with a 2009 title, any rake angle you want in a variety of styles and rear tire width, then weld in your engine mounts. Any engine.

    Or you can muck around. . .

    Remember, IF you (an individual) buy or build a NEW "one time" custom chopper there are new EPA rules (as of Jan. 2006) regarding the engine that can be used. I quote; "ONLY ONE NON-CERTIFIED CUSTOM CM MAY BE BUILT IN THE USER'S LIFETIME" and they mean exactly the original user. This build process also requires documentation.

    If its a brand new frame and has NEVER been registered, it must use an EPA certified engine, which means its a new MANUFACTURER'S unit for most of us (also documented). Otherwise it can be Exempted by EPA but then you can't really use it for your daily ride. That's why OCC and WCC and other builders are using either stock HD EPA-approved engines or pre-certified S&S units in their new "custom built" choppers. These custom builders are now also limited in the number of new units / bikes they can build. Most fall under the Jan. 2006 mfg. production quota rule "... Up to, but not more than, 100 custom motorcycles per annum." Now we know why OCC and others have to charge so much $$$ per bike.

    I did a ton of research on this issue and decided to use a stock 1980 XS frame so as to NOT come under the new EPA CM bike rule.

    FYI:
    Your state MAY allow you to register a "NEW" chopper without trouble, then again, the more populous states; IL, CA, AZ with EPA Air Quality Programs frequently get audited by the Feds for motorcycle compliance. They can and do flag and SEIZE those motorcycles that are not in 100% compliance or whom have NOT gone through the OFFICIAL EPA EXEMPTION PROCESS.

    Entire container loads of NEW motorcycles and scooters have been seized at Long Beach - Port of Los Angeles, CA because they were in violation of EPA's Jan. 2006 rules. That's another reason why custom builder Johnny Pag had to wait a full year and jump through 15 zillion hoops with EPA before he could import his Parallel Twin Cylinder 200cc Choppers from China.

    There's an exception to these rules:
    There is one other type of exemption that will apply to riders, and that is the “custom motorcycle” (CM). This is like the kit bike in that it does not have to meet the EPA emissions standards, but different in several other important ways. A builder may build 24 or fewer per year and sell them commercially by notifying the EPA and including a tag somewhere on the motorcycle stating: THIS MOTORCYCLE IS EXEMPT FROM EPA EMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS. ITS USE ON PUBLIC ROADS IS LIMITED PURSUANT TO 40 CFR 86.407-78(c). The 25th and all subsequent motorcycles built that year by that builder must all comply with the new emissions standards. An individual can own as many of the CM exemption motorcycles as he/she can afford. However, there are severe restrictions on how and where they can be used on the roads. Use on public roads is limited to display purposes, such as traveling to and from motorcycle shows. This could be a show in your hometown or a show on the other side of the country. The distance does not matter, only the reason for the travel.

    Do I have to buy the components for my CM before the assembly starts?

    No, the builder can buy all the parts and build the motorcycle before he/she even has a customer for it. However, when done in this manner, the travel restrictions will apply to this motorcycle for as long as this rule is in effect. The motorcycle will have to comply with the restrictions on public road use.

    Will there be limits on how many miles I can ride my CM?

    No, the only limitation is the display purpose clause. The CM is not supposed to be used as a daily ride; it is intended to be a show bike that can only be ridden to shows or displays.

    If you find out anything different from a new custom / chopper builder it's because they are either ignorant of the ruling's specifics or 'whistling in the dark' hoping and praying to escape EPA's notice - for now.

    PS - You will note that OCC transports all customer bikes and show bikes in a covered trailer e.g. they won't risk a DOT - EPA seizure. The custom bikes you see Paul, Senior and Mikey riding on American Chopper were personal CMs exempted by the EPA.
