What's the longest trip you've taken on your XJ? I'm working on planning a 1300 mile weekend trip from Cincinnati to D.C. this summer. Just interested in hearing about other long trips that others have taken on their bike's.

    Planned trip:

That looks like a fun route!!
I've only got about one month of riding under my belt, longest was about 400km last year in a day. Way more is planned for this year :)

I'd love to cover all of the south end of Ontario, everything below like Collingwood and Barrie.

About 700km in one day. Traveled west from Toronto to Lake Huron - rode north up the coast and made our way back to the city around midnight.

If you mean more than one day - then probably 1400km over the span of a few days of riding.

Your trip looks very nice. It should be a great ride.

    Good luck and Safe Riding!

Yes, me and a buddy of mine plan on taking the trip. I was trying to explain to my wife why we're turning an 8 hour trip into 13 hours. She doesn't understand why we don't just take the highway :)

If you could do 1000 of the 1300 in a 24 hour period you would qualify for an iron butt. Award. If you do it on your Maxim iinstead of a Wing you should get extra credit. Maybe a spent uranmium butt award or somethoing! Check out the iron butt website.

My sister and my brother inlaw and I are planning a trip starting out riding around Mt St Helens then heading to Astoria, Oregon and going down the coast about 2/3rds then turning inland to Crater Lake then back up home to The Dalles/Dufur. Its about 1000 miles, we are planning it for 6 days and 5nights so we can sightsee.

We have 2 or 3 200 mile practice rides planned out, and any incidental spur of the moment ones too.

200 is probably the most I have done in a day. I am thinking of an 800 mile trip this summer. We will see if it pans out.

I did run into a guy once riding what looked like a 70's Yamaha 160 single cylinder bike (thats right 160ccs) at a Gas Station along I-70 in Kansas City. I'm not sure where he started from but he said he was headed to Seattle. I thought the guy was nuts. He had a back pack strapped to his tank and several other bags on the bike all wrapped in Trash bags (it was raining at the time). He hopped on his bike and headded out on I-70 west while I was filling up. Can you even sustain 70mph on an old 160cc bike?

I've run from San Diego to Sacramento/Folsom twice (about 525 miles one way). Not a feat I care to repeat. Even with a full fairing, an overstuffed seat and highway pegs it was brutal (on my behind that is). Other than that, it was enjoyable until the sun went down and it got really cold until I dropped into Los Angeles (October can get cold in the valley).

I haven't gone more than 100 miles in one trip so far on my Maxim. I hope to change that this summer though.

But back in '90 I rode my '81 Exciter 250cc from Chanute Illinois to Milton Vermont. I had a military duffle bag on the back and was able to do about 55-60mph on it.

126 miles every time I ride to work and then back home again.

No long trip on either XJ (yet) the longest single voyage I ever did on the Norton was about 3300 miles (over 14 days.)

I'm picking up my XJ900RK on Friday but I've done 5000 miles in two weeks in the summer of 2007 on a thumper(a single) - BMW 650GS. Don't let anyone ever tell you that a 650 isn't big enough for a long trip. I went with two guys who both had big BMW's 1000cc and I out rode them every step of the way. There are guys who do round the world trips on 650's.

When I do get my 900, I'm planning a trip from Lexington Kentucky to California this coming early fall (early september)

In 1981 when the Seca was still new, we rode 1500mi round trip to the Smoky Mtns from Springfield, MO. On the trip we rode what became known as the Tail of the Dragon at night and in the rain, an experience I will never forget.

You guys need to get out more!!! Did Riverside Ca. to Denver Co. in one day on the Seca Turbo. Best part was it was in October, going through the Eisnehower Tunnel I see above me in big red letters "WARNING ICE AHEAD!!" It was only blowing snow. Came up on a pickup truck with a motorcycle in the back. I go to wave, he snaps a picture of me :) Coming back home two day's later was hell on the rear. Getting to the 15/70 split my rear was begging me to take a break. At Vegas it was screaming to get off that torture device... I made it home three hours later very sore and tired.. Mental note.. next time take more asperin.

I drove to Des Moines, IA from Fargo, ND and back in 24 hours to raise money for a friend who was in an accident. 1,024 miles. Also toured the painted canyons in ND with two buddies and that was a four day 1200 mile trip. In August we are going to Laramie, WY then to Beartooth pass in MT, and back to Fargo. Said and done it will be a 2,000 mile trip and we have 5 days. Take a look at my bike, not exactly a wing. Love every mile though. We usually get about 10,000 miles a summer and that says a lot since I live in ND.

I'm not sure the mileage but I rode my '85 XJ from Salt Lake City to LA, then up to San Francisco, then back across Nevada through Reno to Salt Lake City again. Took a total of 5 days. The bike handled great, but it was 2 weeks before I was able to walk normal again.

I'm planning a trip the second week of August. I'll be traveling from The International Peace Gardens in ND to the Yellowstone Park area. I want to hit the Bearstooth Pass and also the Big Horn Mtn pass west of Sheridan. Keep your eyes open for a white Seca 550, I'll buy you a beer (or pop) if we meet each other!

Longest one day trip on the 1982 XJ750RJ, Sweet Scarlet, 617 miles (987Km) from Amarillo, TX to Warda, TX with a few scenic stops along the way. First 300 miles were fun, last 300 miles were work. Drove down for the 2008 Central Texas Carb Clinic. Broke the drive up in two days on the way back about 250 miles the first day, detouring through the Texas hill Country, 400 miles the second day. 1267 miles (2027Km) in three days. Going to do it again this May for the CTCC but two days both ways this time.

Longest trip on the 1982 XJ750RJ Gray Ghost was when I flew to St. Louis, MO from Amarillo, TX when I bought him last year. Road from St. Louis to Joplin MO, the first day, then Joplin, MO to Amarillo the next day. Around 850 miles in two days. Great weather until the last 3 hours when I hit the remnants of a Pacific hurricane coming over the Texas Panhandle that dropped 6 inches of rain in those three hours. (Aerostich Triple Digit Rain Gloves WORK!)

I ride either one to work (25mile round trip) most every day of the week unless it is raining, snowing, and icy (though I did get caught in an ice storm on one ride home, don't plan to do that again).

    The Bike Doc
    Amarillo, TX

1982 XJ750RJ Sweet Scarlet 21,000 miles and counting (original around 5600 when purchased in 2007)
1982 XJ750RJ Gray Ghost 11,000 miles and counting (original around 7000 miles when purchased in 2008)
1982 XJ750RJ Bones (to be stripped to the bones, no more miles just parts)

I would definitely do the 1000k in 24 hours again. It is a weird, crazy, and life-changing journey. I would love to have company next time.

I've done a 1500 Mile round trip on my Seca. I went to El Paso from Ft. Worth and back over 4 days. Most of the riding was on the 1st and last day. No windshield, but I had rebuilt the seat. It would have been pure torture without that. That's not out of state, but if you look at a map, it's about as far from Ft. Worth to El Paso as it is from El Paso to California.

I've also taken it down to the hill country a couple of times. A couple weeks ago I did 1200 miles in 3 days and tore up the twistier roads that are there.

My longest day is about 600 miles.

The bike has also been to northern Arkansas and to N.C. (the Dragon) but it got to those places on a trailer. And before someone starts - two up with luggage and a wife that's around social security age ain't happening for more than 3-400 miles a day on a Seca!

San Francisco to Pomona, saw a show, then rode back to LA, in a day! on an '80 xj650. ouch. about 500 miles? I've done LA to SF a few times, a couple times in winter/rain with no windshield. It's sometimes fun being the only motorcycle out. Where are the Harley guys on cloudy days?

Chicago to Detroit a few times about 300miles each way But that was on my goldwing. My old XJ750 prolly only 80miles at a time nothing big. After new tires and heavy duty shocks im going to put on my XJ550 hopefully i can get some long rides off of it. Just sucks that the speedo doesnt go over 85

My longest was when I moved from Aiken, SC to Atlanta, GA (170 miles) on my stock '82 XJ650 SECA. Of course, I went the "long way 'round" though Dogpatch Arkansas with a side trip to New Orleans. I ended up with about 2500 mi by the time I was through. The longest and most painful day was the last, 500 mi all interstate.

While in the Air Force on a 3 day weekend drove from Loring Maine to Allentown PA. 750 Miles one way. Took 11 hours one way when the speed limit was 55 all the way. Took my bike home just to show it off. Stopped in Hartford Conn. at a hardware store bought a broom stick and a roll of tape. Broke the sweeper end off and taped to the frame to make my home made highway bars. Worked like a charm.

From Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, Canada, to Oconto WI (about 281mi) in an evening, grabbed some shuteye for about 4 hours, then from Oconto, straight through to Owensville, MO (about 602mi). In essence, I left here in the Sault at about 10pmone night, and arrived in Owensville about 27 hours later.

The trip down was cool and threatening rain. Got caught in a deluge outside of St Louis, MO. The trip back was longer, it was hot and I'd give the bike some cooling time at each refueling stop.

All on my 83 stock 650 Maxim. Normally kept her to about 60-65MPH instead of the posted speed limit on the interstate. It was the first trip I took the old girl on and wanted to be easy on her.

My butt was OK from the trip (I have some "extra padding" back there), but boy, were my inner thighs ever sore when I got back here. Had issues walking for a few days afterward.
