on my way to work yesterday the my 1985 xj700 went from ok to poor running after about 30mi. i nursed the bike home at the end of the the day only to find that cyl 1,2 and 4 were leaning out. checked the compression and all was good (within 1 -2 psi) pulled the carbs all clear there too. hmmm time to check the intake boots .... i pulled them off to find the factory original seals installed ( missing some chunks) and nearly welded to the boots. i had to boil the boots for 40 min before i could cut them loose with a razor from the metal plate on the boot (it was like cutting rocks with a butter knife).

I am thinking of composing a letter to them letting them know about this substandard equiptment i found on my bike failing after 24.5 years
    :)

Do you think a soldering gun, with the attachment used to cut poly rope would have knifed through the boots? You know, the flat blade attachment that burns through the rope and cauterizes it at the same time?
I've used my to cut rubber and small plastic pipe before.

    That's literally a hot knife!

    Just a thought...

it reminds me of a buddy of mine that had a 88 mazda pickup that had its first chutch change at 248,000 miles, it had been used for the first 10 years of its life as a landscape company truck by his brother.

These Japs just dont know how to build with quality parts.

    I'm sorry mid.
I thought you were saying that the boots themselves were so hardened with age that they were impossible to work with.

    Never mind.

Subtract 5 points from my score for not paying attention...
