First I would like to thank everyone here for all of the help with this project. Its not done but its close enough for now. This 1981 Maxim was given to me and was in pretty rough shape. My brother and I went to work on it and after more than a few tries at carb cleaning we finally got it running really well. The bike was stone cold stock when we got it with a big dent in the tank.We repainted, powder coated and cut and chopped until we were semi happy with it.The rear fender came from a trailer and is powder coated to match the tank. The mufflers are from a sportsster.

Now for the intro.I live in Northern Virginia and am a self employed plumber.I have mostly owned Triumph bikes from the 1970's.Last year I got a killer deal on a 1979 KZ 650 and started to get an appreciation for vintage Japanese iron.Whan a customer gave me this 1981 Maxim I couldn't help but to cut it up a bit.Great site here, tons of good info.I think I may have wore the search button out doing this project.Thanx again!

Looks great!! Give me some ideas for mine. I already have the same mufflers. What shocks did you use, from a Sportster too? And is it the stock seat cut down??

The shocks are stock as far as I know. They are rusty and I will be replacing them when I come across a good deal on some. The seat is a cut down stock one.

Drive shaft side a little closer. Looks liike you painted it black. Looks good with the contrast aluminum at the end. Just wanted a better look at it.

how did you attach your seat? I was planning on cutting my stock seat down as well, but am coming up short on how to fasten it to the bike

I was going to Tractor Supply tomorrow to look at trailer fenders for the rear (might fab up a thinner one for the front too). This is similar to how my SECA will look when finished. Thanks for the pics and I gotta say she looks great man! :D

I got my rear fender at Tractor Supply.Almost fit perfectly, just a gentle massage and off to get powder coated.
To hold the seat down I installed some bolts thru the plastic when I had the foam off.I then drilled holes in the frame and ran the bolts thru the holes.I was going to bolt it on but decided to drill thru the bolts and use clips to hold it down.

Thank you for the close up pics of the seat. That was one of the other issues that was going to deal with. Did you trim down the stock fabric or use your own? It's the best looking seat that I have seen so far, most look like boat seat cushions.

It is a trimmed down stock seat and foam that we took to the guy who did the seat on my 65 pick up truck.I'm not crazy about the way it turned out but the seat follows the lines on the side covers so I guess its OK .

I have to say that is quite a nice bike. You cut the back end much like what I plan to do on mine.

Could you please post some close ups pictures of where you cut the back end off? I want to leave the shocks on mine on as the roads up here definitely put them through the paces.
