Can you remove baffles from silencers on XJ's? Looking for a deeper sound.

From the stock pipes? Not easily, and it'll look like crap when you're done. I've seen people drill some extra holes in the baffles, can't see that making a huge difference in sound though. Best way would be to pick up a set of Mac's, you can get 4-1 or 4-2 for in between $215 and $300 depending on what pipes you get. Chaparral and Dennis Kirk are two good sources, I've heard good things about oldbikebarn.com and partsnmore.com also.

Stock pipes a big job , i had a good look in there too and decided it was not worth the effort...

4/1 repackable would be far more productive...

Has anyone tried the steel core baffled, turn out, mufflers only from JC Whitney?
16 and 19 inches for less than $45 each.
They have a couple of designs in mufflers only.

Don't get fooled into thinking you can alter the exhaust characteristics for a deeper sounding note without needing do do something to compensate for the modification. Less back-pressure is going to mean you'll be running LEAN. Leave it lean and eventually you be replacing, valve, seats, guides, valve seals, gaskets, the cylinder head (if it cracks) ... rings, pistons and who knows what else. Mabe just a piston or two if your lucky.

Preventing the LEAN means stepping-up and installing a JET KIT. A long history of trial-and-error ... reduced much of the TRIAL work figuring-out what jets to run with certain exhaust systems. But, then your heading for the treadmill ... intake air to match jets ... pods? Airbox? What's next???

Take a look at the cabbage-patch growing between the outside folds of your wallet. If you like having green between leather ... don't start messing around with the exhaust until you know what system works with what stage kit and what its going to take to get it all done right.

Otherwise ... you'll be swapping bank notes for exhaust notes until the supply of your bank notes is exhausted!

I'm probably getting close to losing backpressure due to rust holes in my existing muffflers.
At this point I've had success riveting patches over the holes .
How do you replace the exhaust without throwing everything off.
Can I replace the whole system with a Mac exhaust without chasing the dragon so to speak??
Or at least find out what else has to be done before starting the Kaos?? :? :?

There are a couple of systems that plug-'n-play without re-jetting fuss. Not sure if MAC is one of them. MOTAD's 4 into 1 guarantees their system to fit, not need re-jetting, oil filter easy off/on and no workstand issues. Huge money. Several looks ... black, chrome and stainless.

I have slip on mufflers from JC Whitney. My headers and crossover were fine but the mufflers were little more than rusty shells that sounded horrible and I'm sure weren't giving anything in the way of back pressure. I got the 24 inch megaphones, which turned out to be Emgo mufflers. They look better, sound better, and the bike runs better than it did. Performance wise they probably aren't as good as a new Mac 4 into 1, but at $45 dollars each, they were a lot cheaper.

the previous (and original) owner of my 82 maxim 650 drilled three holes (probably about 1/2 inch holes) through the baffles of both stock mufflers. according to my uncle (weird sidenote: the original owner was my uncle's neighbor growing up, and my uncle had an 82 maxim at the same time) with the holes drilled my maxim had a noticeably deeper tone then his while cranking the throttle, though the sound at idle wasn't much deeper.
i haven't noticed any weird lean issues or backpressure problems, but just drilling holes probably isn't going to satisfy someone looking for "louder" pipes.
