I know in cars there are specific guidelines as to how to adjust the head light - is there any such guidlines for the XJ650? I have removed and replaced the assembly a number of times (chanig out the Tach.) but have not done any night riding lately so was wondering.....

Yes. Generally speaking, the "top" of the low beam pattern should correspond to about even with to around 3" below the center of the headlight when you measure it at 25 feet.

Pull your bike right up against your garage door (or wall) and mark a spot even with the center of the headlight. Draw a horizontal line. Back the bike up so the headlight is 25' way from the wall.

The low beam pattern should line up as above.

I always leave the bolts just "snug" and go find a dark stretch of road for some fine tuning. You want the high beam to be practical, we're not hunting racoon.

Tell that to the armadillo I nailed at 60 mph on my last night ride several months ago. He managed to duck under the big rig ahead of me, only to look up and see me coming straight at him...

I know my bike came at least a foot off the road when I hit him. Luckily I had a good grip and hit him square or things could have been very bad for me. As it was, I only had to go and clean out my shorts.
