I wanted to try and make it work.
Either super high at the rear fender or bull horns at the tank.
    What fun...

re seat - well thanks for the heads up dude, good luck with that
re pic - you would have the best luck uploading it to a site like photo bucket (http://photobucket.com/ )
then when you select your picture in the site, it will give you a copy and paste html code for forums, kinda like the one below

    Code:

It looks like the sportster two-up seat would be easier to fit on the 81 frame.
    Has anyone tried one?

I have a couple of old 2-up sportster seats That I used on mine until I bought a LaPera for it. The wife has been hoping for one to fit on her XJ650 and I have tried them and they just dont fit. Unless you want to spend more money working them over I would stay away from them. But if you want to try them i got a couple for sale. 8)

If you are so inclined, there is a site that shows you how to make a custom seat for your bike. I can try and hunt up the website, has great step by step pics...

Making a seat is the best way to go. Isn't all that hard either. Take a look at mine in my gallery. I am still planning on making another, and I will take pictures when I do, but I havn't had time lately. My seat foam is so thin, that it sits rather hard. I did it on purpose though to follow the lines with the tank and side pannels.

That's a good site to use to make the seat, but it is missing some stuff.
Get some aluminum tape, the kind used for duct work(not duck or duct tape) and cover the painters tape with it. Then wax it with automotive wax about three times. This will help the fiberglass to come off clean.

Also, if your seat wraps around the frame like mine does, you are going to want to think about wheather it will still fit with fabric wraped around it.

For the mount, I fiberglassed a bolt into the seat that runs through a rubber gromment in the fender with a wing nut on the end of it. Just make sure you have plenty of tire clearance for that. Luckly I did.

I went to a local fabric and foam store, and asked for the most dense foam they had. it was only 1/4" thick. So I covered the entire seat with one layer of it, and then cut triangles starting with a large one and going up to a small one stacked on top of each other to get the shape I wanted for the front of the seat. (the bars under the seat on a maxim are level, and I wanted to give the ilusion that they were angled toward the back. Then I added a few pieces of foam under my butt bones, and on the passenger seat, then covered the whole thing with a less dence 1" thick foam.

After you get the seat covered with foam, you can take a high speed sanding disk and shape it to what ever shape you want.

Glue your foam to the pan with the most expensive fabric glue you can buy. The kind that is used for head liners works best. It is made for changes in temperature.

I stapled my seat to the fiberglass, but only about every other staple went in all the way. That part was a job. Make sure you pull the material real tight so it doesn't wrinkle. After I finished I trimed up the extra material and glued felt on the bottom of the pan to protect the paint.

One more thing. I have coverd several seats and learned that thicker material isn't always better. The thinner stuff is much much easier to use and pull over the seat. Also, if your seat is too thick, you will have to put a seam in it somewhere, and I can't sew.

They make a foam that's a combo of visco and latex. It holds it's shape well, conforms well and reduces pressure for a comfy ride.

Could you tell me where to get some of it? I want some better foam for my next seat.
