I've got an 82 or 83 xj 750 in the garage in need of an exhaust (anyone help me out?). I found an ad on CL in Richmond VA for all these parts and then some (engine is apparently available) off this xj 750. I've got a line on an entire maxim in PA that looks to be cherry, only problem is a float bowl post is broken...anyone see the carbs in this pic? So, my question is this...these parts APPEAR to be off of an 81 (note the round headlight). Now I am not 100% on this, but they appear as such and the poster states that is what it was, an 81. Now, will the carbs work from 81-82/83? I'm more of a maxim x guy now. I'm looking to get this bike complete and out the door as I have a new bike (one I am going to keep in my stable) and am deploying to Afghanistan for work soon. Thanks in advance.

Carbs are by the front brake rotor. Except for the 550s and x's which used Mikuni I believe all the in line 4 models of Maxim and Seca carbs are the same.

    Borrowed from our friend Chacal

"Hitachi carbs were originally used on all Yamaha XJ650 models (except Turbo models), all XJ750 models, and all XJ700 (non-"X") models. All other XJ models from this era (XJ550, XJ650 Turbo models, XJ700 "X" models, XJ900, and XJ1100 models) used Mikuni carbs."

There are a few differences between the 80-81 and 82-83 Hitachis. The bowl shape is slightly different (but as far as I can tell they're interchangeable). More importantly, the idle mixture adjustment screws have a much coarser thread on the earlier models. Definitely not interchangeable (found that out the hard way when I picked up a junk rack of carbs that just happened to have a nearly perfect set of pilot screws to replace my nearly stripped-off set - which turned out to be different. D'oh!).

mcrwt644, which carb # is bad on the bike you're looking at? I can send you one of my carb bodies to replace the broken one, for the cost of shipping. They're pretty rough (any part that was made of steel is rusted), but the body is aluminum, so you should be able to clean it up and swap the internals from your broken carb.

    Let me know...
