I'm gutted, the last time i crashed a bike was a GS1000 twelve years ago, i thought i was over the whole crashing thing, but apparently not. I can safely say that twelve years have not been kind to my body and it deffinaltley hurts more the older you get.

Ok. I've been hummin and harrin about hardtailing for a while. Now would seem to be the perfect oportunity.

I only have one question, steel, 1" x 10 swg mild steel tube or 1" seamless cold drawn tube ????

or have i got it all wrong?????

in short, what steel do i need???

Glad you are OK. One crash every 12 years is a pretty good average. I think I'll crash mine before I paint it.

Hey plumber. Does a hardtail handle better in the mud?
Just joshin', glad you didn't get hurt bad.
I rode straight into a ditch when I kinda froze up on a slow turn one time, the road was covered in sand, and my brain couldn't work out a no-crash solution.
You never know when it's coming do you?

On one of my first rides, I had my wife on the back and wasn't at all used to the weight. Needed to make a right turn from a stop at a T intersection. Trying not to lean too far, I wasn't able to make the turn and drove almost straight across the road and onto the grass on the other side. Fortunately, the drainage ditch there was only little more than a bump so I didn't spill ...

The bike only cost me £600 to build in the first place and all of that money came from scrap copper, so no fully comp, just 3rd party.

I'm enjoying the prospect of the rebuild and will just have to weigh in nother pile of scrap copper to pay the bills.

Looking good, Have you thought about doing anything with the forks, like putting a different rake on it.

I really want to hardtail my bike too, maybe next winter.

i hit a snag today, i mounted the diff and tightened everything up..... all looking great but the wheel wont turn...... closer inspection and a bit of head scratching....... arse, it turns out to be the spindle, as i've used an axle plate the spindle is no longer fitting at the correct length. i need to mill 8mm off the thick end of the spindle to allow it to lock against the axle plate and therefore not lock the wheel together under tension. the worst part of this whole drama is i cut had out the newly welded diff mounts before i worked out it was the spindle.

never mind, i'll not do it again

How do you keep the gear housing from wanting to rotate "clockwise" as you look at it in your last pic ??

It should exhibit maybe 900 foot pounds of torque in 1 st gear.

The dif mounting plate that has been on and off the frame twice now will fix it in position. I've used the end inch of the swinging arm plated around it and braced it onto the frame. when the part for my mig arives and i can get it welded back into the frame i'll take some close up pics that will explain it better

by looking at the "how low" pic it looks like you could run a wider tire by leaving the drive shaft housing off. If you could cut it down and make a dust seal for the rear end of it to keep that pesky wales mud out? I don't know I'm just shooting out ideas. Looks like your comming right along though, nice work.

The driveshaft housing is a integral part of the swingarm. If you removed it there would be nothing to keep the differential aligned and all of the bikes weight would be on the right side of the swingarm. I would imagine that one good bump would be enough to bend it and cause some serious damage to the bike.

AHA ! So you're going to weld the last inch of the driveshaft tube to the plate at the end of the frame.

Nice looking welds by the way. I think you can go up to a 150 size tire now.
