I have an '82 XJ1100J which has the rear and one front caliper combined on the right foot pedal with the other front caliper on the right hand lever...Not sure if any of the other Maxims are this way, but this model is.
I'm wondering if anyone has ever split them up like normal brakes (rears on the foot and both fronts on the hand lever). What kinds of issues did you run into? Did you have to swap out to a different front master cylinder to have enough pressure to have good front brakes?
    Any thoughts?
    Mike

I just did a complete brake upgrade on my XJ1100, I did consider changing the brake arrangement but decided not to. I was going to give the original design a chance to work. I rebuilt tha calipers and replaced the brake lines with a set HEL stainless lines. After the upgrade braking has improved alot, I never knew this bike couls stop this fast. You can change the brake line arrangment to seperate the front and rear but you'll have to get new lines. Look on the XS11.com website they have some articles explaning how to do it. My opinion, leave it alone and upgrade the lines and pads.

I have done this on mine. I used a front master off of an older XS1100 as well as all the lines from the same to do the conversion. My rear master was somewhat hooped so I just removed the proportioning valve, re-tapped the outlet and put in a short banjo bolt to feed the rear caliper off the rear master. I am much happier with the braking abilities of the bike now as there is actually some braking power. The front is much stronger and the rear is a bit better, but is still only barely useful for slow speed maneuvering.

One day I will find a replacement rear master and make a custom line an maybe it will work better.

Just did it on mine and added braided hoses too.
On the line for the front caliper connected to the pedal there is a double banjo bolt. Use that on your master cylinder on the bars and just get 2 braided lines long enough to reach.

For the rear remove the proportioning valve and get a banjo bolt to fit
    (m10x1.0 if I remember correctly).

Get a braided line to fit the rear.
Bleed the brakes ( use a vacuum pump to start or you will be at it for 6 months!). I used Earls solo bleeds they work great!!!

    Happy Motoring!
