I've just about got my engine completely back together, however, I am having a bit of trouble with the front tensioner. I push it in as far as I can, but it still protrudes about 3/4" to 1". Is the valve cover supposed to push it in to the final position, or is something misaligned? This happened as I was losing the evening light (I have no shop, just a heavy TV stand to work on ). Perhaps with some sunlight I can see what's going on.

It sounds like its dragging on something. Mind you it doesn't slide in easily I seem to remember using a rubber mallet but that was purely out of frustration.

If you got ahead of yourself -- and are trying to fit the "tensioner" ... (The front is a GUIDE ... the rear is the tensioner ) ... having already set the cams and chain ... it won't go. The chain needs to be slacked so you can angle the front Guide toward the middle (almost rear) of the cam chain gallery to slip the dowels into their holding grooves. You must have done that with the rear one. The rear one needs to be set-in from beneath the grooves and raised-up in them. Do the opposite maneuver you had to do to get it out.
