That seems a bit low to me. at least around here, any old piece of junk will get $1000, especially this time of year. I can't tell a whole lot from your gallery pics, but I wouldn't let that bike go for less than 2000

hes gonna have it a long time @ 2k in this economy will be hard to find anywhere

between 1200 and 1500 is real good. but idf it has issues it couldn't go for more than 1000 - 1200

BUT don't decide to sell it in haste , if I were you I would walk away from the bike for about 1 week then jump back in to fix the problem with a clear mind.

Y4life, about 8 months ago I was like you and thought my xj was really worth some money. Based on feed back I received here I assumed I could get +\- $3k for my 750. At the time I had less than 10,000 miles on it, totally stock and from the looks of things is a bit cleaner than yours. Listed it on eBay and the final bid was $1800. Needless to say I did not sell it.

Take a look at this fantastic 900. You will see that it is an even worse time to sell a bike than it was 8 months ago

Once warmer weather arrives, bike sales WILL pick up. They WON'T pick up as much as they would if the economy weren't nearly dead; and prices are going to be depressed for probably at least a couple of years.

That being said, prices also tend to have interesting (not always logical) regional variations.

Another sad sorry truth is that unless you have a 100-point resto or a pristine stocker, it's NOT gonna fetch A: What you think it's worth; or B: Anything near what you have in it. I've been thinking of naming my '83 The Toxic Asset or maybe The Money Pit.

That "turbo-ized" 900 (650 Turbo fairing fitted) is interesting. Did you look at the website link? Apparently the guy was originally planning to find old XJ900s and build and sell these things. Looks like the idea never took off, and this is the first and last one. Nice bike, definitely should have been worth more than the $1850 it DIDN'T sell for.

Yamaha4life, "one thing after another" eh?
Welcome to the needs of a 28 year old bike. If you don't go through it and rebuild all of the soft parts, top to bottom, you can expect more of the same. The light at the end of the tunnel is knowing when you finish it all that the machine in is top condition and you got it there. Your brake issues are most likely due to the need to rebuild the M/C and calipers. New brake lines would be a very good thing as well. I'm assuming that your machine suffered more or less the same neglect as most of ours and did not have it's regularly needed servicing which leads to the poor condition of this often neglected system. I know it can be discouraging at the front end but I'm in the same boat as you, I've been salting away rebuild parts for the last two years in anticipation of the complete overhaul that is due this summer. Is it worth it? I think so and I'm not even there yet. Hang in there and formulate a plan of attack, then carry it out.

$2000 easy here if anyone has an extra buck right now! but cheap bikes are hard to find around here and when they do come up they are gone pretty fast

I just bought a 83 xj750 with 16k miles for $925 running a month or so ago. You can see the picture on my gallery. I immediately put 250 into it. Oil change, air filter change, used exhaust, headlight bracket, etc, Is it worth it. In my opinion yes. I can't afford the 10k that a new bike would cost (which is the only way you will get one that needs NO work) and well it is easier for me to put 1000 down (bike cost) and $100 a month (till I get caught up on the neglect) into this one. It sure beats the 300 to 500 for the next 72 months. While I agree time is money, it is also a labor of love, and when I show up at daytona, I can say something that none of the harley punks can.... I know what makes mine tick. Just some food for thought though Kelley Blue book for my area valued my bike at 1050 or so, but that is for my area. If you want to get a general idea of price you can allways try that to get a general idea.

I paid 900 for my 85 X last spring it was running but had a burble in it cleaned the carbs well and put the #2 diaphram back on properly(someone had it mis aligned and she ran/runs Great. Needed tires right away they were dry rotted a touch, went threw the bearings. Had a dent in the left side of the tank I had that fixed and the entire bike painted(even the wheel to match). THe only thing she needs now is some cosmetic things one of the two PO's(I am the third) layed it down and there is some rach on the left blinkers, mirror and the hardest of all to find the crank case cover. It looks more and more like I am going to have to buy a complete engine just to get a cover then put my rashed on on it and resell it. After all of this and it is a nice loolin bike I seriously doubt I could get 2k for it maybe 16-1800 if the right guy came along.

My 83 750 cost me $650 and with good reason. It hadn't run for two years and had suffered years of neglect. The carbs were shot the clutch was worn and the rear tire was bald. That was the good news. I spent that summer pushing the bike home. She choked and sputtered and died on a regular basis. I knew nothing about bike repair, but I had a shop manual and time. This will be year three of my journey. Last summer I was able to walk out to my ride, choke her a little, hit the starter button and listen to a smooth idle. Trust me, the pain is worth the gain. Do it yourself and reap the rewards.
