I recently got my first bike and after putting about 1000mi I have encountered my first problem. After reading different threads, I figure this is the place to ask questions. It is a 750 Maxim and I was having trouble with the starter. Having started it one day, it quickly died. Afterwards I tried again and got the sileniod clicking described in another thread (would have been helpful earlier). I tinkered with the bike for a few days checking over wiring connections and tracing what I could see. I removed the starter and replaced and finally it worked again. Unfortunately, I don't think I fixed the problem as now the bike starts with no problem, idles fine, but dies immediately when putting it into gear (even with the clutch in, which is my guess at where to start looking). This may have been the original problem as I often start the bike while holding the clutch in while in gear (Is this bad?).

Any ideas on 1) what is causing the problem, 2) tests to identify, or 3) a simple quick fix?
Not the most mechanically inclind, but I'm ready to ride so I need to fix er first. Any help would be appriciated :)

Is it hard to shift into gear? Perhaps your clutch cable is starting to unravel. I would check the clutch cable first for damage and then check it's adjustment. If it's not disengaging entirely that would do it.

You might try the kickstand switch. located under the frame by the kickstand.
Mine worked sometimes and sometimes not.
I slid the rubber boot up the shaft and sprayed it with penatrating oil and have not had a problem since. If that doesn't work, it might be the switch is bad. You can test it by unplugging the connector and connecting a jumper wire, not to the switch but to the wiring harness. If it stays running when put in gear, the switch is the trouble. The clutch lever switch can be checked the same way.
Good luck and welcome to the group. Post some pics here in the gallery.

jdrich48 you were right on the money. After connecting a jumper wire to the wiring harness the engine no longer dies when shifting in gear.

    Thanks alot!
