Hello all I have a beautiful 82 XJ550J with only 7k miles all original (garage kepted). I had it since new and it is my favorite bike. However my starter solenoid finally pooped out after all the years. Can anyone tell me where I can find one, and if at all possible a OEM part.

If you need a starter solenoid and can't wait for shipping, you can get one at any small engine repair shop (lawn tractors and lawn equipment) and get one for a smal engine. Several makes/models use solenoids and they wokr just as good (or better) than the OEM solenoids do. I've had one on my bike for 3 years now and it's never failed yet. They are a little different shape, so you will need some enginuity to get it to fit where the old one is now. I made one fit by removing the rubber that holds the old one in place and stuffed the after market solenoid in the same spot and used one small screw to hold it in there.
I know the solenoids from the old Ford starters work also, but they are a bit bigger. Any auto store carries them. It's just a matter of making it fit somewhere on the bike and wiring it up.

I thank everyone for the help. My local Yamaha dealer said he can still get them. That is what I get for listening to someone who said the bike was to old. I am in no hurry for the solenoid. I own a few bikes and still able to ride. I just can't have my old girl sick...I'm sure you guys understand.

Ok I forgot the other big question. Does anyone know where I can find a start button. I don't need anything more than just the little black button. I seemed to have broken mine from pushing so hard on it.

Chacal sells the OEM relay, a plug in aftermarket relay you have to look very close at to tell it's not OEM and the start button repair kit.

This forum rocks. I did get a start button and solenoid today from Yamaha and it was not pretty. It all added up to the low price of $75, but all the lights and qizmos came to life, and it roared to life with no effort at all.
